The Boidae Family

This family, which includes Boa Constrictors, Anacondas, and Pythons, are the largest known to exist in the world. Some of these snakes have been recorded at lengths of 30 feet, weighing over 300 pounds. The main focus of this page is the Boa Constrictor, the snake that i find most consuming of them all (no pun intended).

Appearance

Being found mostly in South America, they prefer subtropical environments and utilize many of the animals that dwell in these areas as food and sources of nutrition; contrary to popular belief, this does not include humans. A triangular head gives the appearance of intimidation, and it's earthy colors give camoflauge that is handy in taking prey by surprise. In aid to its ability to capture animals for feeding are the backward-curving teeth used to seize animals as much as twice the size of the snake's head. A familiar sight in the vegetated areas of South America might be one of a Boa Constrictor striking a young rabbit, and coiling its long body around the rabbit's torso, constricting its ability to breath, and essentially suffocating it to death. The snake then dislocates its jaw and ingests the animal head first, swallowing it whole. To see this hunt is to be next to nature in its purest form -- survival of the fittest; it is awe-inspiring and is found to be an invigorating experience to any lover of the wild outdoors.

Dispelling The Myth

A) Boa Constrictors are NOT poisonous.
B) Boa Constrictors do NOT prey on humans.
C) Boa Constrictors, when properly cared for, are less harmful than the average domestic dog.

Boa Constrictors are not, and have never been, poisonous or venemous creatures. In fact, a Boa only requires to be fed once every 3-4 weeks, and becomes quite attatched to the owner, in essence eliminating the possibility of an attack to a caring owner. For the most part, religion is the basis for fear of the Boa, in that Adam and Eve had a run-in with the snake representing Satan, but to those of us who are owners of snakes, we know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this does not me the snake is the bringer of evil.
