CHUCKY IN THE MEDIA ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Back in 1993, two young boys committed a horrific murder in Britain, killing another little boy.Looking back on this tragedy, I still feel sick, and full of sorrow for that poor little boy and his family, and how frightened he must've been at the time of his abduction. However, I'm also disgusted at looking back on this case, because of the pathetic scapegoats they used to explain away how our society could create such monsters.Chucky, apparantly had "a hand in [the] death" of Jamie Bulger. Why was Chucky blamed? Because the police on the case happened to find the "Child's Play 3" video in one of the boy's house at the time of the murder.Despite the fact that the boy's had a long history of violent, anti-social behaviour, Chucky, with his violence, and remorseless provided a suitable scapegoat. In a way I can understand. Who wants to admit that a 12 yr old is capable of such violent and horrific acts? Still, the situation was blown out of proportion, and alot of hype was fed by the media to the public. I'm sure everyone knows the effect hype has. Titanic for example - despite stunning visuals and good performances, not really a great movie by a long shot - but it's the highest grossing film ever.Someone in Australia has seen it 150 times at the movies. Why? Great PR. Chucky had great PR too. Determined to make him Public Enemy Number One, and they succeeded.I believe this is one of the reasons it's taken so long for a Chucky 4 to come out.I think those two little boys should be locked up and never released, but I also think people should stop grasping at things to blame it on.Those kids were time bombs. If they hadn't killed Jamie Bulger, they would've killed someone else, a little way down the track. I believe what people fail to realise is that violent videos are always being blamed for the sickos society produces. I'm sure that if the sentencing judge had not made a reference to these videos being instrumental as negative influences, the video case of the movie would have been overlooked. And no matter what violebnt video it hapened to be - I'm sure they would've found "links" to tie it in with the murder. That's the media. That's propaganda. Anyhowz, I was a huge Chucky fan then, as I am now, and went about collecting every newspaper artcile with the name "Chucky" in it at the time.Bein an idiotic 13 yr old, I only cut the articles out, without thinkin of keeping the newspaper they came from or the date, so I present them to you know without those vital facts!!! SOWEEEE!!!Chucky was hot news at the time...he made several front page editions. Here they are, unedited, with every hyped "fact" bared to you - you can make up your own minds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FRONT PAGE: VIL VIDEO (Huge picture of Chucky's grinning face, as it appears on the box of Chucky 3) Did Chucky inspire Jamie's murder? By Robert Wainwright and agencies This is Chucky. He is the video doll being blamed around the world for playing a key role in the killing of two year old Jamie Bulger. In Longdon, newspapers have called for the burning of copies of the movies, Child's Play 3, which features the grotesque, foul mouthed doll coming to life to mutilate and murder men and women. There are 8000 copies of the video in Australia with an M-rating meaning it is readily available for children under 15 to hire. Chilling similarities emerged yesterday between Child's Play 3 and the Bulger murder in Britain. Child's Play 3 is the last vilm Neil Venables hired before his then 10-yr old son, Jon and Robert Thompson, also 10, lured Jamie Bulger from a shopping centre, tortured him and bludgeoned him to death. In the movie - described by Australian distributor CIC Video as a "black comedy for adults" - the doll is killed by two young boys who disfigure it's face before destroying it in the spinning blades of a giant rotor. Thompson and Venables also disfigured Jamie's face before dumping his body on a railway track to be dismembered by a train. The video was a favourite of Thompson and Venables, according to a neighbour. Australia's Senate select committee on community standards in electronic technologies will review the film classification of Child's Play 3 in the wake of the worldwide furore. Committee chairwoman, Queensland Senator Margaret Reynolds, said last night " I would expect we would certainly be doing some close examining of a film which has been named in a murder trial. "I can understand why some people would like to see the film banned, but it is important that we do not overreact." In other developments yesterday: A JUDGE in Brisbane's Children's court yesterday likened the case of a 16-yr old girl, who carried out an armed hold-up like an experienced criminal, with the influence of videos of Jamie Bulger's killers. SKY television in Britain withdrew it's screening of Child's Play 3, scheduled for yestersay, saying it would be "inappropriate and insensitive" in the immediate aftermath of the Trial. When Thompson and Venables were convicted on Thursday, trial judge Michael Morland said "exposure to violent videos" might have influenced the behaviour of the boys, now 11 years old. The Child's Play series of movies also played a role yesterday in a torture- murder case being tried in Manchester, involving five alleged killers. One woman accused of the murder f Suzanne Capper,16, was said to have assumed the role of Chucky. Ciminologist Professor Paul Wilson said the link to Jamie's death with the video Child's Play 3 highlighted the need for stricter classification of movies in Australia. While the video would not have made Thompson and Venables murderers, it could have given them an idea on how to commit the crime, he said. British Home Secretary Michael Howard, who has been urged by MPs to investigate the possible role of violent films in Jamie's killing, told Parliament he would not be rushed into "snap judgements" He said "The case has caused us all to reach deep into the recesses of our hearts to examine whether there is anything that could have been done to prevent it or to prevent any recurrence in future." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TRAGIC LINKS here are strtling similarities between Jamie Bulger's murder and the horror movies Child's Play 3.Parts of the film draw a chilling parallel to what happened to Jamie at the hands of Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, sometimes down to the smallest detail. Child's Play 3 was the last video rented by Jon Venable's father before the killing. The movie series, though restricted, was a fafvourite among much younger children. In Child's Play 3, a demonic doll called Chucky comes to life to embark on a homicidal rampage. The clear dissimilarity to the Bulger case is that the doll is the villain and the youngsters are trying to kill it. In the closing scenes, however, are six deadly similairties. FANTASY 1. Part of the story takes place in the woodland where young army cadets are playing war games. Instead of real bullets, they use pain pellets colored red and blue. If you are hit with a pellet, you are "dead". Chucky is hit in the face with a pellet and marked with blue paint. 2. Chucky is lured by a boy who calls out to him and runs away to entice him to follow. 3. Chucky's face is terrible mutilated during an attempt to kill him. Some is sliced off with a scythe. 4. Chucky doesn't lie down despite his terrible injuries, so his attackers have to finish him off. 5. The final scenes of violence in Child's PLay 3 take part in a fun fair which featues a railway track. Others are filmed in a cemetery. 6. The doll is destroyed by the spinning blades of a gigantic rotor which dismembers it. FACT 1. Shortly before they killed Jamie, Thompson and Venables squirted him in the face with blue paint thye had stolen. 2. The boys lured Hamie to join them in the same way. 3. Jamie's face was mutilated by the boys who attacked him with a 10cm wide metal bar. 5. The final stages of Jamie's life were played out on a railway track beside a cemetary. 6. Jamie's body was crushed and dismembered by a train running over it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FRONT PAGE: IDEO NASTIES PUT IN THE DOCK LONDON, Friday: Accusations over the role of horror vdeos in violent crime have mounted in the wake of the Jamie Bulger murder trial. Despite strong pressure from PMs for action, the Home Office responded cautiously to the statement by the Bulger trial judge, Justice Morland, that exposure to violent videos might have encouraged the actions of Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, the 11 yr olds jailed for the murder. Mr. David Maclean, a Home Office Minister, said yesterday that the judge's comments would be closely studied but police had found no evidence linking the case with "video nasties." The controversy centers on the horror movies Child's Play 3 in which a doll called Chucky, possesed by the spirit of an evil killer, goes on a murderous rampage. Child's Play 3 was rented by the father of Jon Venables, one of the boys who murdered James Bulger, less than a month before the toddler's death. Child's Play 3 is the latest film in the Child's Play series, which started in 1988. They all reature Chucky the demonic doll. The second film was a big hit and the third has been popular in video rental shops nationwide since it 's release in October last year. If one looks to find them, there are echos in the film of elements of the James Bulger story, although the father of Jon Venables has denied that his son saw the video that he had rented. Among the more obvious details, there is the blue paint which Jon Venables and Robbie Thompson (Child A at the trial) threw at two-year old Hamie. In the film, Chucky and others are sprayed with blue paint in a war game. There is the railroad track. where Jamie finally met his death. The movie climax is a scene in a ghost train where a boy narrowly misses being run over on the tracks. The police officer who led the Bulger murder case, Detective Superintendent Albert Kirby, also said he had seen no evidence to suggest the boys had access to videos any worse than might be found in many households. Police were also told that a Roald Dahl story, The Swan, available in Liverpool schools and libraries, foretold the death. In the story, two bullies abduct a younger child and drag him to a railway embankment where a train almost kills him and he is threatened with drowning. He eventually flies to safety. Justice Morland, passing sentence on Wednesday ,said: "It is not for me to pass judgement on their upbringing, but I suspect exposure to violent video films may, in part, be an explanation" Britain puts video nasties in the dock British Sky Broadcasting cancelled a screeing of the film tonight. It has shown the film twice recently. Meanwhile, the Irish Republic's biggest video renting chain withdrew Child's Play 1, 2 and 3 from it's shelves. In the House of Commons a Conservative MP, Sir Ivan Lawrence, QC, called for action to curb "the constant diet of violence and depravity" fed to youngsters through television, videos and computer pornography. Sir Ivan, chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said it was becoming "more and more obvious" that this was a major reason for the rise in juvenile crime. In a strange coincidence, Child's Play 3 is also a factor in a murder trial no before the courts in Manchester. Last week the Manchester court heard that a mother of three took on the role of Chucky while she injected teenager Suzanne Capper with drugs as she underwent days of torture before being burned alive. Bernadette McNeilly, one of the five people charged with her partner, was said by a co-defendant,Jean Powell, to have told Miss Capper that "Chucky's gonna play" when she injected her with amphtamine. Powell, 26, told the jury: "Chucky is Bernie". She added : "I have heard the word Chucky on a Rave tape and I have also seen the film about a doll that comes to life and kills people. I did not understand what Bernie meant until she gave her the dig [injection]." Suzanne died on December 18 last year, four days before being set on fire in woods just outside Manchester. Horror for hire brings home blood, gore and violent death by Sally Weale LONGDON, Friday: The music is heavy and pounding. The camera scans over a mass of decapitated dolls' heads and severed limbs, all shoruded in cobwebs. A pulverisde body, spattered in blue paint, is hoisted overhead.Blood, thich and gooey, drips into a bubbling cauldron of molten plastic below. This is Child's Play 3, a video nasty of the sort that Justice Morland must have had in mind when he said of the two boys found guilty of killing two year old James Bulger: "I suspect exposure to violent video films may be part of the explanation" It is also a video that was hired by the father of Jon Venables, Child B. Child's Play 3 gets under way with the moulded outline of a doll's face emerging, it's cheeks bloodstained, it's eye sockets empty. It screams. Chucky "The Good Guy" doll is reborn. The video starts with blood and gore, it ends with blood and gore. In the middle, it's pretty much the same. The narrative,as a far as it goes, is based up on a mixed-up American boy called Andy Barclay. As an 8yr old, Andy sent the shares of a toy manufacturer plummeting with claims that it's best selling line of dolls was possessed - clearly the stuff of Child's Play 1 and 2. When 3 opens, we learnt hat eight years on, after a series of lawsuits and damging publicity, the manufacturers are considering re-launching The Good Guy doll onto the market. Despite opposition, the managing director decides to go ahead, dismissing the demon-doll theory as nothing more than the fantasy of a disturbed boy. The production line starts to roll and the first of the dolls is handed, smiling and freckled, to the managing director. Chucky, the Good Guy of the '90's is back, with a mission to find Andy and possess his soul. It does not take long for Chucky's true colors to shine through. Just minutes into Jack Bender's R-rated filme, the doll has burst out of his box and is playing devilish tricks on his maker. At first he seems nothing more than a bit of a tease. He turns off the televsion, hides the remot control, starts up other toys and send marbles scattering across the floor. It gets more serious. Screaming profanities the doll grabs a golf club and beats the company director. He hurls darts at his victim with a gellful cry of "bullseye", and finished him off by strangling him with a yo-yo. "Just like the good old days" he sayd with satisfaction as the body collapses lifelessly under him. "Nothing like a strangulation to keep [sic] the circulation going" With that, he moves off, his multi-colored baby shoes pictured walking over the dead man's head. Given that the killer is a two-foot high doll with ragged, carrot-colored hair and a gormless grin, kitted out in patterned kiddie's dungarees and striped jumper,. to an adult Child's PLay 3 looks and sounds ludicrous. Still, it is 86-minutes of pretty remorseless violence. If one looks to find them, there are echos in the film of elements of the Jamie Bulger story, although the father of Jon Venables has denied that his son saw the video that he had rented. In the film, hoever, it is the forces of good which finally win the day - thought not before a dustman gets crushed to death in his own dustcart, the blood oozing garishly down the side s of the truck, and a bar ber is sl a shed across the throat with a razor, and a boy is blown to a pulp by a hand grenade. The film shows lots of blood, but little pain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Finger pointed at Chucky over death AS he sentenced Britain's two youngest killers, Justice Michael Morland said he suspected violent videos may provide part of an explanation of their crime. Today the finger is being pointed at particular videos - the Child's Play series, starring Chucky, the doll who comes to life and commits murders. It has now been revealed that the two killers had watched the movies just before Jamie Bulger was murdered. That film,Child's Play 3, tells how a talking doll is possessed by evil and comes to life in a military academy. In a dreadful echo to the Bulger tragedy, he abducts the youngest cadet from the academy and tries to kill him under the wheels of a fairground train. (Don'tcha just love the way they slightly altered the story line of the movie to fit in with the crime? ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chucky 'may have had hand in death' AS he sentenced Britain's two youngest killers, Justice Michael Morland said he suspected exposure to violent video films may provide part of an explanation to their horrendous crime. Today the finger is being pointed at particular videos - the Child's Play series, starring Chucky the evil talking doll who comes to life and commits graphically violent murders. It has now been revealed the two killers had watched at least two of the movies, the last one just before Jamie Bulger was killed. That film, Child's Play 3, tells how a talking doll is possessed by evil, and comes to life in a military academy. In a dreadful echo to the Bulger tragedy, he abducts the youngest cadet from the academy and tries to kill him under the wheels of a fairground ghost train called the Devil's Lair.
