SCOUTING
Welcome to the 4th Colombo Scouting Pages. This is where you can find all sorts of information about Scouting in many different places. We also provide some services here that you may be looking for, but have never seen.
We're celebrating the worldwide Family of Scouting in all its diversity. We try to go beyond simply telling you about Scouting - we want to SHOW you Scouting as it happens around the world in our family of youth and adult members. . We would like to invite you on board, too!
Scouting is a way of life for over 17 million people in the World Organization of Scouting Movement's member Scout Associations. The values learned in Scouting are often instrumental in guiding a person's entire life, and people with Scouting backgrounds are well represented amongst the world's leaders in commerce, industry, and government.
Since its founding by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, Scouting has proven to be the most tenacious and positive worldwide youth organization in existence, transcending even the worst of political nightmares. Its worth has been demonstrated repeatedly by the enmity it has received from totalitarian regimes. In recent years, Scouting has often been the first youth organization to begin restoring itself in nations emerging from behind the Iron Curtain. With a long record of service to others, Scouting teaches young people the principles of good citizenship through action.
All successful Scouting programs share the common attributes of challenge, adventure, variety, and loads and loads of FUN! Each age group has an activity based structure suited to the needs and interests of the children who participate. Leadership training is an important feature of Scouting, too, with Scouts learning to lead their peers and develop the program that best suits their tastes. As Scouts progress through the various age groups, they take an ever-increasing role in both leadership and the building of their program activities.
One of the most important attractions of Scouting compared to many other youth activities is the opportunity it provides for young people to get into the outdoors and do things that simply cannot be done at home or in the neighborhood. Many Scout Groups do a lot of traveling for weekend or longer activities. There is a great deal of adventure involved in getting to places that most people never see. Something about a sunrise on a mountain peak makes a morning a whole lot more special than seeing the same sun rising from a window at home.
Young people grow a great deal emotionally and socially when they are able to build and carry out their own adventures in a group where they are able to learn to lead each other and to take care of themselves and their companions without a lot of help from adults.
Scouting today is a mix of old and new, with traditional skills and today's technology working together to help young people build a solid path to the future. If you are not already a member, why not join your local Scout Group? If you are a member, come on in and see what you can learn here. There's a world to see and a lot to do!
Today, tomorrow,~ everyday in some corner of the earth a boy makes the scout promise for the first time, a promise as set down by BP~ to do his best to live a life of brotherhood and understanding and to strive to win that peace on earth which is given to men of goodwill.
