Kendle filled the cup with Diet Coke at the Tulsa Movieplex. She was serving an older man of about 65 or 70.
"Here you go sir. That will be $1.75 please."
The man handed her the money. She gave him his change and helped the next person in line. They had been pretty busy that day, but the rush had slowed down, because everyone was in the middle of a movie.
She was now helping a young man that looked to be about 17 or 18 years old. He was tall and had shoulder length dark blond hair. He looked kind of like the oldest member of a band that her little sister liked. What was their name? Hanson? Yeah, that's it.
"Hello, welcome to the Tulsa Movieplex. What would you like?" Kendle rambled off the Movieplex greeting.
"Um, I think all I need is a large popcorn with butter and three Dr. Peppers."
"What size do you want the Dr. Peppers?"
"Oh, sorry. Large please."
Whoa. He's really cute. I filled the cups with Dr. Pepper and got the popcorn. Maybe I should try to talk to him. Yeah. That's it. Hi! I'm Kendle! Are you enjoying the movie? No. Scratch that. Hi. You look familiar. Have I seen you somewhere before? No. What if he is that guy in the band? I think my sister said they were from Tulsa. Why do I have so much trouble starting conversations? Oh, well I'll just give him his food.
"Here you go." I gave him the food, but I just kept staring.
"Um, how much do I owe you?" He said, sounding rather amused.
"Oh!" I snapped out of my trance, "It's $12.00," I said quickly. Hopefully not too quickly.
He accidentally dropped the money when he was handing it to me.
"Sorry. So, I haven't seen you around here before. Are you new?" he asked.
He's talking to me! I hope I don't screw it up.
"Yeah. I just started last week. I needed a job to help pay for school."
"Cool. Do you go to Oral Roberts?"
"Yeah. Well, sort of. I'm going to start next semester. You look kind of familiar. Have I seen you somewhere before?"
"Um…well…yeah, probably," he said kind of hesitantly.
"What do you mean?"
"Oh, nothing. Forget about it."
Arrgh. What does he mean? Could he be Isaac Hanson? I never really looked at any of my sister's posters that closely, so I can't tell for sure. Maybe he doesn't want to feel like he's bragging about his fame.
"So, what kind of music do you like?" There. That was a reasonable question to start a conversation.
"Oh, I like old-rock, and rock/alternative. How about you?"
"Well, let's see. I like mostly all kinds of music, but there are a few groups, artists, and/or songs that I just can't stand."
"Really? Like who?"
"Well, there's Leann Rimes, the Spice Girls, the Backstreet Boys, and N'Sync. There's more, but these are the ones that I change the station because of."
We had been talking for a long time, and Taylor and Zac were probably wondering what happened to me.
"Cool. You know what? We've been talking for almost twenty minutes, and I don't even know your name. By the way, I'm Isaac."
"Well, hi Isaac! I'm Kendle!" she said as cornily as she could as she extended her hand.
We were laughing at Kendle's joke when Zac appeared. He hadn't really appeared, but rather came out of the theater showing "You've Got Mail" and we just hadn't noticed.
"Hey Ike! Where have you been?! We've been dying of thirst in there!"
Then Zac noticed Kendle.
"Who's that?" he asked.
"Oh sorry. Kendle, Zac. Zac, Kendle," I said quickly, slightly shooing Zac back towards the theater.
"Is she a fan?" Zac said quietly.
"No…I don't know…I don't even think she recognizes us. Maybe she's just not saying anything," I said in the same quiet tone that Zac had used.
Zac took two drinks and the popcorn, and proceeded back to the theater.
"Well, it's been nice talking to you, but I better go before Tay and Zac go ballistic. Can I call you sometime?"
"Yeah, that would be nice," Kendle said as she wrote her phone number on a piece of paper that she had ripped off of a note pad sitting on the counter. "Here you go. I hope you enjoy the rest of the movie!"
"Thanks. What time do you get off?"
"6:30"
"Really? That's about the time the movie should get over. Do you want to go get something to eat after you get off?"
"Sure! That sounds great! Are you sure your brothers won't mind?"
"No, they won't mind…wait, how did you know that they were my brothers? I never told you that."
"Well, I kind of figured it out, because my little sister is practically in love with you guys. She has about a bazillion posters in her room, and I noticed that you looked like them. Then when you even had the same names, I knew it wasn't just a coincidence."
"Oh, sorry. You didn't say anything, so I figured that you didn't recognize us. I feel kind of stupid now."
"Don't feel stupid. It was an honest mistake."
"Thanks. Well, I better go. See ya after the movie!"
I walked back to the theater with my Dr. Pepper, which was now considerably watered down. I sat down next to Taylor.
"Geez Ike! What were you doing out there? You missed most of the movie!" Tay commected, rather loudly. There was a series of, "SSSSHHHHH!!!" and, "QUIET IN THE FRONT!!!"
"Taylor, shut up!" I said as forcefully as I could in a whisper so as not to disturb the rest of the moviegoers as Tay had done.
"Okay, okay! Geez! You don't have to bite my head off just because I asked a simple question!!!" Tay said, this time much more quietly.
"Sorry. I was talking to Kendle. She's gonna get something to eat with us after the movie. T hope you don't mind, but if you do, it doesn't really matter because it's my car, and I'm driving," I said exasperatedly.
"Well, first of all, who in the heck is Kendle?! Is she your imaginary friend? And second…" Taylor paused for a moment, "wait, I don't have a second. )Oh, well…"
I could barely choke out my next words through my laughs, "No, she is not my imaginary friend. I met her when I was getting the drinks. She works here. She's really nice, so I asked her if she wanted to come along. You don't have a problem with that, do you?" I took on my "older and much bigger brother" role. Tay just shrugged it off and said nothing in response.
"Zac, I think we have the perfect opportunity to get Ike back for telling Mom about that broken vase…" Tay said as obviously as is humanly possible. I decided to ignore them and watch the movie.
In about five minutes, the credits started rolling and the lights came on. We got up and went out into the lobby. It was 6:15. Kendle wouldn't be off for another fifteen minutes. I walked over to the concessions counter where Kendle was getting ready to leave. Tay and Zac had disappeared into the bathroom.
I saw Isaac, Zac, and who I assumed to be Taylor come out of the theater with the huge crowd of people. Zac and Taylor were talking about something or other as they walked into the bathroom.
