...For those of us who don't enjoy the rain as much as Gene Kelly, these are helpful hints for how to spend your time having fun and staying dry!
Art Museums: New York is a gold mine for excellent museums, and many of them charge suggested admission. You could spend the whole day in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have classical exhibits, and also They also change their exhibits often to highlight different types of artist. They ask that you pay for the full admission, and by the time you are through, you will defintely get your money's worth.
History Museums: The Natural History Museum, yes, from the film Night in the Museum, is a great, educational place for children and adults alike. Their animal collections are phenomenal. My favorite? Check out the whale!

My favorite permanent exhibit is the Egyptian Art. It's the largest outside of Cairo, and boasts a full tomb! Plus, with this admission, you can visit the Cloister's as well.
Situated at the very top of Manhattan, it contains a stunning collection of Medieval Art. It is easily reached by the subway (A train), and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. If you walk towards the water, you get a beautiful view of the Hudson River.
It's hard to believe you are so close to the hustle and bustle of the city when you make your way to the castle-like structure. It was designed in the style of five different French cloisters, and is quite a contrast from the sky scrapers in Lower Manhattan.
If you're interested in some of the more modern art, check out the MOMA. They charge $20 for admission, but every Friday night, they have free admission! Also nearby is the Guggenheim, which specializes in 20th and 21st century art. Admission is $18, but on Friday evenings, it's pas as you wish.
Broadway Shows: If you love musicals, you HAVE to see a show when you visit. If you have time, rush a show. For some shows, you can win tickets for as cheap as $25. All you have to do is show up two hours before the show and put your name into the lottery. The first 13 names drawn win 2 tickets. If you don't feel like betting, you can always go to the TKTS booth. They sell tickets for the day, so only do this if you are willing to see any show. If you really want to see a specific show, buy it ahead of time. The TKTS booth is located in Times Square, but there's a separate location at South Street Seaport and there usually aren't any lines.
