What is the game you're designing and what progress is being made?

1. General information about my game

In development since 1996 when I first came up with my Status System*, this game has been in the making for 8 years. The history of this game is almost the same as that of my mind game, which can be found here.

My game [title is classified and somewhat undecided] has numerous features planned for it. Here's a simple list on just a very few of the major features I have planned:

Tons of features all in a well designed world that's so big that, even at 700 mph it'd take 7 seconds to cross the entire area the diagonal distance. You can go up to extreme heights and be able to fall at 4 times the speed of sound, even faster. You could also go deep underneath the surface of the northeast lake which happens to be 400 feet deep [yeah, you'll have to gain either a massive defense or immunity to pressure to be able to go there] and see how dark something really gets, or, better yet, if you can figure it out, go two miles below the city in a secret area and find some interesting things around here as well. There's tons of mud and quicksand pools lyin' all over the region.

2. Current issues

Current issues are available on my new website location.

3. Showcase

Section 3 contains a few images and screenshots of what's going on. Screenshots, because they are so big, are links instead of pictures. Clicking that link will show you the screenshot. Smaller images are shown directly, unless there's too many of them [total file size exceeding 40 KB for example]. All contain extra details to explain more about them. Most are temporary and will come and go as time goes by.

Map layout plan

Update on June 29, 2004: This map's layout has been changed. Now included are a hotel and a bank [should've been on the plan, but must've forgotten about it, otherwise how're you supposed to safely deposit all that cash you get from fightin' monsters?], The bowling alley was too big so I shrunk it down to half the size and has been moved two blocks east of the original position [where the bank is]. The hospital, exercise center, court house have been removed off the map plan and looking for ideas for one final building in the map [or two if I come across them, otherwise housing replaces it].

This is a map of the area of the whole region described. Though the colors may seem off, I've color-coded it to help myself identify which building is which and what certain areas are, otherwise, the magic shop's color may be the same as the king's castle, item shop, and even the weapon shop making it very hard to really tell which is which. I used the 16 colors that come with the 4-bit palette. The color coded regions are explained as follows with the map on top [a much higher resolution map will be used in the game around 4 times this size]:

Urban area color codes:

black - [unused]
gray - roads [standardized widths for highways that take you safely between areas without fighting monsters [? undecided]]
dark red - hospital [2 stories plus basement] - deleted on update
dark yellow - exercise center [2 stories] - deleted on update
dark green - grassy areas
dark cyan - restaurant
dark blue - court house [1 very high story] - deleted on update
dark magenta - king's castle and government-related zones [3 stories]
white - [unusued]]
light gray - houses [each block on map represents 2 long horizontal houses; fields separated by a fence]
red - magic shop [7 stories]
yellow - recreational areas [>3,^1 = bowling alley; >1,^3 = swimming pool [pool, dressing area [north], and fence]; >3,^4 = fountain]
green - item shop [1 story, possibly 2 if more than 40 items are thought of; mostly potions like HP and SP potions]
cyan - school and classrooms [here, you can learn about the game's mechanics and how things work]
blue - blue water
magenta - weapon and armor shop [two sides; items in it are highly limited right now as I need more ideas besides one kind of shield [4 patterns/designs and 4 kinds of weapons]]

Rural area color codes:

black - [unused]
gray - roads
dark red - quicksand
dark yellow - mud
dark green - grassy areas
dark cyan - dirt-only areas
dark blue - [unused]
dark magenta - event area roads [roads are [10 feet wide] unless thickened]
white - jails
light gray - the wall and map border [wall is 4000 feet high]
red - a wall, any wall other than the light gray item
yellow - recreational areas
green - high mountain in southeast corner
cyan - Judge's room for event area
blue - blue water
magenta - event zones

Possible add-ons: Baseball stadium [Though it was thought of before, but due to a change in the design, this became impossible to place, though I'm likely to come up with an idea on where it would go.]

Treasure chest model

This is the first of my items to showcase. It's a treasure chest. If you find one of these, open it as it can contain very rare items [or expensive ones], though some contain items hardly worth keeping - sell those unless you really need 'em. My favorite part about this treasure chest is the curve. That blue spot on the far right side is the origin when I created this, nothing to worry about. I just cropped a screenshot from the modelling program: MED.

Main gallery

The game album is no longer available here, but is available, with much higher resolution images, here.

4. Latest developments

My latest developments are as follows:

I've built the main city

I've fully completed the event area.

I'm working on the terrains that surround the city. There are 256 areas for terrains, but not all areas will have a terrain. Basically, the city area subtracts 16 terrains, and the event area adds more than it subtracts because of it's odd shape.

I'm working on creating the realistic scenery high above but having scripting problems right now....

Footnotes:
* You can learn about the Status System's history on this page.
** You can see this list of spells [and download their special effects for what I have] see section 4 here.
*** My mind game is a futuristic-like video game I play in my mind often. To learn more about out, read this report. You can learn about my mind game's history, which is quite related to this game's history, here.
You can read more about this script's basics Section 3 here.
This notation is simple to understand. Picture the city as a 4 by 4 grid. Start from the bottom left corner of the city. In the case of >3,^1, go to the right 3/4 of the way and up 1/4 of the way. This is within the city area only, which is surrounded completely by water [with the exception of a few bridges].
