Phantasy Star Odds & Ends

His Royal Chicken Choker

This is the King of Cille. The final boss for the first generation in Phantasy Star 3. He actually looks pretty cool. His clothes are well detailed and I like his design. However, his animation…

Is that really the type of gesture that you want to be making in front of your own daughter, Your Majesty? His advisers must be constantly facepalming. The people of Cille and Shusoran laugh behind his back. They call him “His Royal Chicken Choker”.

Why is there no Queen of Cille? What happened to her? Maybe she died. But I have another theory. She got so tired of seeing her husband constantly flash the sausage salute that she ran off with a sexy young squire. She tried to take Maia with her but Lyle kept turning into a dragon and bringing her back to the castle.

The battle animations in Phantasy Star 3 are very odd. A few make sense. I like how the sprite family of monsters frantically run around and the chirpers are cute. But most of them are just plain lazy looking. But the King of Cille really takes the cake with his wildly inappropriate gesture.

I’m trying to figure out why on Earth the artists thought that this would look good. You could argue that it’s not quite as rude because his thumb is up. But it really doesn’t make that much of a difference to me. If you shake a thumbs up like that it still looks rude. Why didn’t they animate his left arm instead? At least it would look like he was shaking his staff to cast techniques. That would make sense. That wouldn’t make him look like a blue blooded perv. But instead we get King Fratbro. No wonder the people of Shusoran are so proud of Lyle. You’d probably rub it in too if the next kingdom over was ruled by “His Royal Chicken Choker”.
