Though you may or may-not agree with me on all of these issues, it at least lets you know where I stand and whether I am a compatible surrogate for you.
Would you be willing to carry triplets?
No. I feel that this is too much for me physically and mentally. I would be willing to carry a single baby or twins, but no triplets...
Would you be willing to undergo amniocentisis?
Yes, for medical reasons I would be willing to do this, to help determine if there were any defects, abnormalities or hereditary diseases.
Would you be willing to have an abortion?
Yes. If there was a medical reason to have an abortion, such as a complication, abnormality, disease etc...
Would you consent to selective reduction?
Yes.
Is there anyone you would refuse to become a surrogate for?
Yes. I would not become a surrogate for any religious extremists (cults, sects...). I would also refuse to become a surrogate for anyone who believes in corporal punishment for children. I am not trying to police anyones parenting, but I could not bring a child into the world who would be subjected to beatings and abuse. I believe that if you can't hit your wife, then you can't hit your child. I would also not become a surrogate for an alcoholic, non-prescription drug user or someone with a severe mental illness. These decisions are absolutely for the protection of the child.
Would you refuse to become a surrogate for anyone due to race, sexuality, religion etc...
Absolutely not. I believe that anyone with the time, love, resources and patience to care for a child should be entitled to a family. I would be a surrogate for an East Indian, homosexual, single person, person over 50, Catholic etc... Anyone I believed to be a good person capable of caring for a child.
What would you charge to become a surrogate?
To be honest I really don't know. I have never been a surrogate before and I realise that people would be taking a huge financial and emotional risk and I appreciate that fact. In a perfect world I would do it for no compensation, but in reality I need to save to return to university. It also depends what the IPs would expect of me, would you want twins, amnio, selective reduction etc...
Any additional expenses?
Anyone who emails me I would like them to specify a range they would be willing to offer and whether they would cover travel expenses, maternity clothes, some cleaning help if I had to go on bedrest, life insurance etc... These aren't demands, just wondering what would be offered.
Why do you want to be a gestational surrogate anyway?
I want to be a GS because it is such a worthy thing to do for another family. I just couldn't imagine my life without my daughter and I feel very sad that other people do not have the joy of children. Becoming a surrogate would be a dream for me, both to help another family and to assist me in obtaining a better future for my own family by completing my univerity degree. I would feel very proud upon giving birth and watching the IPs cuddle with their newborn, it would be a once in a lifetime moment to observe!
Anything else we should know about you?
Yes.
- I am overweight, though I am very healthy in every other respect. This would not affect my carrying a pregnancy to term.
- I have never had any illnesses, other than having my tonsils removed when I was 14.
- I had a tubal ligation (my tubes clamped, which could be reversed though I have no intention of doing so) on 3/16/05. This means that I cannot conceive another child of my own unless I had a reversal. I had this done as a means of birth control. I can get pregnant through In-Vitro Fertilization and carry a pregnancy to term, my OB/GYN assured me of this fact.
- I live in Ontario, Canada so medical coverage is not an issue. All pre-natal care and even the birth is covered.
