45) PEEPING TOMS AND WO-MAN OVERBOARD

As told by Chelston Chaves (chelston@vsnl.com) - British India Steam Navigation Company applepie@bigpond.net.au Through Andrew "Scruggs" Fairgrieve - ex sparks - BI

On Board SS RAJULA - BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION CO.
The were many bulkheads in the accommodation where the steel plate had rotted and the Mate put chart paper to cover the hole and painted over it. On one of the trips a lady passenger complained to the Chief Officer....One of the bathrooms had a hole that went through the bulkhead into the toilet. Not large enough to be noticed but rather strategically placed for a peeping tom. The chief officer make sure that the chart paper was put to use and the hole also blocked with "m-seal".

On another occasion with the weather so calm that even the flying fish left ripples as they flew above the water. We had finished lunch and were about to make do with the afternoon "deckhead survey" when the alarm was sounded for the
Man Over Board. We all ran to the ship's side and found that we had a maiden in the water. br>The ship turned around and she seemed to be rather happy in the water so the Old Man just lowered the lifeboat to the water's edge and maneuvered the ship near the young girl. Who seemed to be well 'stoned" with some drugs. Also, she was in her birthday suit. She was pulled into the Life-boat and the Old Man made sure that his bathrobe was thrown onto to her before the L-boat was hoisted up. All she would say was "Cool Man Cool". It turned out that this was one of the hippie's traveling from Penang to Madras and she was locked in the Hospital for the rest of the voyage.
