13) NO.2 DOUBLE BOTTOM TANK - GALE FORCE WINDS AT THE HOSPITAL

Contributed by Ralph

There are indeed many Navy experiences, and in a sense, the old adage about "Once a Marine, always a Marine" holds true for sailors, too.

In 1967 I worked at the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth, Va. If you've been there you know the corner of the building virtually hangs over the Chesapeake. My rotation there put me on a urology ward for a month. One of the patients was an old man with prostate problems. He was from Kitty Hawk, and had known the Wright brothers as a child. He proudly showed us his Naval records daily, regaling us with stories of shovelling coal into the ship's boilers.

At night he was easily confused. One night about two, I walked by his bed only to find him standing on it, looking out the window.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Right good gale out there tonight."

He was listening to the air conditioning.

"Hope the fleet's OK."
