My turtle run

Before we began.
There was an old cage in the yard when we bought the house, and I thought it might come in handy for something later on. Well, a year later, it did!

End of first day (SIX HOURS!)
We started our project at 9 A.M. and went straight through until 3 P.M.! Poor kids got sunburns! All we stopped for was WATER. We repaired the broken wood and replaced all the old rusted chicken wire. I dug down about 6" and put chicken wire under the ground so that the turtle will not escape by digging. Whatta chore that was! The pond was intentionally placed at an angle so that the turtle (and goldfish) had some depth for swimming. Finally, we placed some large river rock around the inside of the enclosure for eye-appeal as well as added defense against escape. On the outside of the pool is a section of play sand, then a section of white rock (I wanted river rock, but WalMart was out) then lastly a section where I spread grass seed.

After we added water and land plants, view to the North.
The water plants are hyacinth, reeds, duckbill and water clover. Those were plants that I found our turtle can eat. We got those from a nursery on Abercorn near Hwy. 17 - Four Seasons Nursery.
We had to add a ramp for our slider to get out of the pond, so we bought a tan plastic welcome mat as a temporary fix until we get the plants to climb the sides.

View to the South.
January 2009 UPDATE on Turtle Run. Jessica and I worked to enclose the turtle run. It is too much to "remember" to cover and uncover it every day, so we finally enclosed it, leaving the gate side "open" as well as 1/2 of a side where the wind doesn't come from. This should make it so that the turtle doesn't "freeze", she still gets sunlight and the pond stays cleaner.
