Louis de Pointe du Lac

He is the first vampire to tell his story to a mortal. Louis owns a plantation in New Orleans and seven more in Louisiana. He made himself vulnerable to Lestat by grieving over his brother. He blames himself for his brother's death. Lestat fell in love with his despair and beautiful complexion. Louis seeks death, instead Lestat gave him immortality in 1791. He was twenty-five years old at the time. Louis is amazed at how clearly he can see things now and how different they seemed to be. He fell in love with everything, yet was horrified by the necessity of killing for surviving. He refused to kill human and feeds on rats and other small animals instead. He soon comes to despise Lestat and regretted his choice of becoming a vampire. He soon finds a new purpose when Lestat created Claudia. She means everything to him. He protects her from Lestat and showers her with love and attention. When Claudia poisons Lestat, he stood aside, helplessly. He does not feel that it is right to destroy Lestat, yet he does not have the power or will to stop Claudia. He helps her dispose Lestat's body and later on burned Lestat, when he came back and attempted to harm Claudia. Louis accompanies Claudia to Europe. Together they searched for other vampires. They encounter the Theatre des Vampires and Armand in Paris. He is deeply attracted to Armand and felt a great deal of affection towards him. His worlds soon shatter apart when Claudia was destroyed. He left Armand and goes away on his own. He told his story to a boy reporter, Daniel, later on and was frustrated when Daniel asked for the Dark Gift. He drains him and leaves him unconscious. The night before Lestat's concert, Louis goes to find him and tries to talk him out of the concert. He fails, but goes with Lestat to attend the concert. He is also one of the surviving vampires who was spared by Akasha because Lestat loves him. Louis is not willing pass on the Dark Gift to anyone ever again. In Memnoch the Devil, he begs Maharet not to chain Lestat into the windowless, bricked-up room, when he went mad with misery because of his adventure with Memnoch. He visited Lestat frequently when he was indeed chained by Maharet. Louis is the most human of all immortals, as a result, his memories are often distorted, "sums of his flaws" as Lestat says. He experiences claustrophobia, fear of being locked up in a close room, fear of being alone, and fear of height. He is an intellectual who thinks through the consequences of his behavior rather than acting on whim, as Lestat often does. However, he causes the most innocent blood to be shed, because of his incapability to make judgment of evildoers and innocent people.
