I published the article about lead in lipsticks, but I have since been corrected.
anyway, you can find all the details HERE Which ends up saying that no one has suffered from using brand name lipsticks.
New kind of Breast Cancer -
In November, a rare kind of breast cancer was found. A lady developed a rash on her breast, similar to that of young mothers who are nursing.
Because her mammogram had been clear, the doctor treated her with antibiotics for infections. After 2 rounds, it continued to get worse, so her doctor sent her for another mammogram. This time it showed a mass.A biopsy found a fast growing malignancy. Chemo was started in order to shrink the growth; then a mastectomy was performed; then a full round of Chemo; then radiation. After about 9 months of intense treatment, she was given a clean bill of health.
She had one year of living each day to its fullest. Then the cancer returned to the liver area. She took 4 treatments and decided that she wanted quality of life, not the after effects of Chemo. She had 5 great months and she planned each detail of the final days. After a few days of needing morphine, she died. She left this message to be delivered to women everywhere:
Women, PLEASE be alert to anything that is not normal, and be persistent in getting help as soon as possible.Paget's Disease: This is a rare form of breast cancer, and is on the outside of the breast, on the nipple and aureole. It appeared as a rash, which later became a lesion with a crusty outer edge. I would not have ever suspected it to be breast cancer but it was. My nipple never seemed any different to me, but the rash bothered me, so I went to the doctor for that.
Sometimes, it itched and was sore, but other than that it didn't bother me. It was just ugly and a nuisance, and could not be cleared up with all the creams prescribed by my doctor and dermatologist for the dermatitis on my eyes just prior to this outbreak. They seemed a little concerned but did not warn me it could be cancerous. Now, I suspect not many women out there know a lesion or rash on the nipple or aureole can be breast cancer. Mine started out as a single red pimple on the aureole. One of the biggest problems with Paget's disease of the nipple is that the symptoms appear to be harmless. It is frequently thought to be a skin inflammation or infection, leading to unfortunate delays in detection and care.
What are the symptoms?
1 A persistent redness, oozing, and crusting of your nipple causing it to itch and burn. (As I stated, mine did not itch or burn much, and had no oozing I was aware of, but it did have a crust along the outer edge on one side.)
2. A sore on your nipple that will not heal. (Mine was on the aureole area with a whitish thick looking area in center of nipple).
3. Usually only one nipple is affected. How is it diagnosed? Your doctor will do a physical exam and should suggest having a mammogram of both breasts, done immediately. Even though the redness, oozing and crusting closely resemble dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), your doctor should suspect cancer if the sore is only on one breast Your doctor should order a biopsy of your sore to confirm what is going on.
This message should be taken seriously and passed on to as many of your relatives and friends as possible; it could save someone's life.
My breast cancer has spread and metastasized to my bones after receiving mega doses of chemotherapy, 28 treatments of radiation and taking Tomoxifen.
If this had been diagnosed as breast cancer in the beginning, perhaps it would not have spread...
TO ALL READERS:
This is sad as women are not aware of Paget's disease. If, by passing this around on the e-mail, we can make others aware of it and its potential danger, we are helping women everywhere.
Please, if you can, take a moment to forward this message to as many people as possible, especially to your family and friends. It only takes a moment, yet the results could save a life.

Cancer News From John Hopkins
This was received from a nursing supervisor at Greenville Memorial Hospital. It was sent to their staff.
Cancer News from Johns Hopkins:
1. No plastic containers in micro.
2. No water bottles in freezer.
3. No plastic wrap in microwave.
Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.
Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital, was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin.
So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.
He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
This is an article I believe you should forward to your family and friends -- anyone who is important in your life!
Also, he pointed out that Saran wrap is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.
Cover food with a paper towel instead.
Important Info on Women's Tampons
One of the female professors in the social work department, Tuula, sent this to all the female staff. I think this is extremely important to pass on to as many women as you can. I know some of you who will receive this email use them.
FYI - VERY IMPORTANT!!
Just goes to show you how corrupt large corporations really are.
Important Info on Women's Tampons - Please Read Carefully
If you are a woman and use pads, but especially if you use tampons, read this and pass it on to your friends. For the men receiving this note, please forward it to your friends, significant others, sisters, mothers, daughters, etc. Thanks!
Check the labels of the sanitary pads or tampons that you are going to buy the next time and see whether you spot any of the familiar signs stated in this email. No wonder so many women in the world suffer from cervical cancer and womb tumors. Have you heard that tampon makers include asbestos in tampons? Why would they do this? -- because asbestos makes you bleed more. If you bleed more, you're going to need to use more. Why isn't this against the law since asbestos is so dangerous? -- because the powers that be, in all their wisdom (not), did not consider tampons as being ingested and therefore, did not consider them illegal or dangerous. This month's Essence magazine mentions two manufacturers of a cotton tampon alternative. The companies are: Organic Essentials @ 1-800-765-6491 and Terra Femme @ 1-800-755-0212.
A woman getting her Ph.D. at University of Colorado sent the following: "I am writing this because women are not being informed about the dangers of something most of us use: Tampons. I am taking a class this month and I have been learning a lot about biology and women, including feminine hygiene. Recently we have learned that tampons are actually dangerous for other reasons than TSS (TSS-Toxic Shock Syndrome "not changing tampon often enough causing toxic illness).
After learning about this in our class, most of the females wound up feeling angry and upset with the tampon industry, and I for one, am going to do something about it. HERE IS THE SCOOP: Tampons contain two things that are potentially harmful: Rayon (for absorbency), and dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching). The tampon industry is convinced that we, as women, need bleached white products in order to view the product as pure and clean. The problem here is that the dioxin, can lead to very harmful problems for a woman. Dioxin is potentially carcinogenic (cancer-associated) and is toxic to the immune and reproductive systems. It has also been linked to endometriosis and lower sperm counts for men. For both sexes, it breaks down the immune system.Last September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that there really is no "acceptable" level of exposure to dioxin given that it is cumulative and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes from repeated contact (Karen Couppert "Pulling the Plug on the Tampon Industry"). I'd say using about 4-5 tampons a day, five days a month, for 38 years is "repeated contact", wouldn't you? Rayon contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin because it is a highly absorbent substance. Therefore, when fibers from the tampons are left behind in the vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground for the dioxin. It also stays in a lot longer that it would with just cotton tampons. This is also the reason why TSS toxic shock syndrome) occurs.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? Using feminine hygiene products that aren't bleached and that are all cotton. Other feminine hygiene products(pads/napkins) contain dioxin as well, but they are not nearly as dangerous. So, what can you do if you can't give up using tampons? Use tampons that are made from 100% UNBLEACHED cotton. Unfortunately, there are very few companies that make these safe tampons. They are usually only found in health food stores.
Countries all over the world (Sweden, Germany, British Columbia, etc.) have demanded a switch to this safer tampon, while the US has decided to keep us in the dark about it. In 1989, activists in England mounted a campaign against chlorine bleaching. Six weeks and 50,000 letters later, the makers of sanitary products switched to oxygen bleaching (one of the green methods available) MS magazine, >May/June 1995).
HAT TO DO NOW: Tell people. Everyone. Inform them. We are being manipulated by this industry and the government, let's do something about it! Please write to the companies: Tampax (tambrands); Playtex, O.B.Tampons, Kotex. All the 1-800 numbers are listed on the boxes. Let them know that we demand a safe product: ALL COTTON UNBLEACHED TAMPONS...
Thanks Vicki
SIGNS OF OVARIAN CANCER
Years ago, Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer. Her symptoms were inconclusive, and she was treated for everything under the sun until it was too late. This blood test finally identified her illness but alas, too late. She wrote a book to heighten awareness.
KATHY'S STORY: this is the story of Kathy West
Gene Wilder is her widower.
I have Primary Peritoneal Cancer. This cancer has only recently been identified as its OWN type of cancer, but it is essentially Ovarian Cancer.
Both types of cancer are diagnosed in the same way, with the "tumor marker" CA-125 BLOOD TEST, and they are treated in the same way - surgery to remove the primary tumor and then chemotherapy with Taxol and Carboplatin.
Having gone through this ordeal, I want to save others from the same fate. That is why I am sending this message to you
One thing I have learned is that each of us must take TOTAL responsibility for our own health care. I thought I had done that because I always had an annual physical and PAP smear, did a monthly Self-Breast Exam, went to the dentist at least twice a year, etc. I even insisted on a sigmoidoscopy and a bone density test last year. When I had a total hysterectomy in 1993, I thought that I did not have to worry about getting any of the female reproductive organ cancers.
LITTLE DID I KNOW. I don't have ovaries (and they were HEALTHY when they were removed), but I have what is essentially ovarian cancer. Strange, isn't it?
These are just SOME of the things our Doctors never tell us: ONE out of every 55 women will get OVARIAN or PRIMARY PERITONEAL CANCER. The "CLASSIC" symptoms are an ABDOMEN that rather SUDDENLY ENLARGES and CONSTIPATION and/or DIARRHEA.
I had these classic symptoms and went to the doctor.
Because these symptoms seemed to be "abdominal", I went to a gastroenterologist. He ran tests that were designed to determine whether there was a bacteria infection; these tests were negative, and I was diagnosed with "Irritable Bowel Syndrome". I guess I would have accepted this diagnosis had it not been for my enlarged abdomen. I swear to you, it looked like I was 4-5 months pregnant! I therefore insisted on more tests. They took an X-ray of my abdomen; it was negative. I was again assured that I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome and was encouraged to go on my scheduled month-long trip to Europe. I couldn't wear any of my slacks or shorts because I couldn't get them buttoned, and I KNEW something was radically wrong.
I INSISTED on more tests, and they reluctantly) scheduled me for a CT-Scan (just to shut me up, I think). This is what I mean by "taking charge of our own health care"
The CT-Scan showed a lot of fluid in my abdomen (NOT normal). Needless to say, I had to cancel my trip and have FIVE POUNDS assure you), but NOTHING compared to what was ahead of me).
Tests revealed cancer cells in the fluid. Finally, finally, finally, the doctor ran a CA-125 blood test, and I was properly diagnosed.
I HAD THE CLASSIC SYMPTOMS FOR OVARIAN CANCER, AND YET THIS SIMPLE CA-125 BLOOD TEST HAD NEVER BEEN RUN ON ME, not as part of my annual physical exam and not when I was symptomatic. This Is an inexpensive and simple blood test!
PLEASE, PLEASE TELL ALL YOUR FEMALE FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO INSIST ON A CA-125 BLOOD TEST EVERY YEAR AS PART OF THEIR ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS.
Be forewarned that their doctors might try to talk them out of it, saying, IT ISN'T NECESSARY." Believe me, had I known then what I know now, we would have caught my cancer much earlier (before it was a stage 3 cancer). Insist on the CA-125 BLOOD TEST; DO NOT take "NO" for an answer!
The normal range for a CA-125 BLOOD TEST is between zero and 35. MINE WAS 754. (That's right, 754!). If the number is slightly above 35, you can have another done in three or six months and keep a close eye on it, just as women do when they have fibroid tumors or when men have a slightly elevated PSA test (Prostatic Specific Antigens) that helps diagnose prostate cancer.
Having the CA-125 test done annually can alert you early, and that's the goal in diagnosing any type of cancer - catching it early.
Do you know 55 women? If so, at least one of them will have this VERY AGGRESSIVE cancer. Please, go to your doctor and insist on a CA-125 test and have one EVERY YEAR for the rest of your life.
And forward this message to every woman you know, and tell all of your female family members and friends. Though the median age for this cancer is 56, (and, guess what, I'm exactly 56), women as young as 22 have it. Age is no factor.
A NOTE FROM THE RN:
Well, after reading this, I made some calls. I found that the CA-125 test is an ovarian screening test equivalent to a man's PSA test prostate screen (which my husband's doctor automatically gives him in his physical each year and insurance pays for it). I called the general practitioner's office about having the test done. The nurse had never heard of it. She told me that she doubted that insurance would pay for it. So I called Prudential Insurance Co., and got the same response. Never heard of it - it won't be covered.
I explained that it was the same as the PSA test they had paid for my husband for years. After conferring with whomever they confer with, she told me that the CA-125 would be covered.
It is $75 in a GP's office and $125 at the GYN's. This is a screening test that should be required just like a PAP smear (a PAP smear cannot detect problems with your ovaries) And you must insist that your insurance company pay for it.
Gene Wilder and Pierce Brosnan (his wife had it, too) are lobbying for women's health issues, saying that this test should be required in our physicals, just like the PAP and the mammogram.
Thank you CHARLA for sending in this important piece of information
A CAUSE OF BREAST CANCER
Ladies,
Be aware! Gentlemen, pass this on to the ladies in your life!
Sometime ago, I attended a Breast-Cancer-Awareness seminar organized by Terry Birk with support from Dan Sullivan. During the Q&A period, I asked why the most common area for breast cancer was near the arm pit.
My question could not be answered at that time. The leading cause of breast cancer is the use of anti perspirant. What? A concentration of toxins leads to cell mutations, a.k.a. cancer. Yes, ANTI-PERSPIRANT.
Most of the products out there are an anti-perspirant/deodorant combination, so go home and check. Deodorant is fine, anti-perspirant is not. Here's why.
The human body has a few areas that it uses to purge toxins from the body, behind the knees, behind the ears, the groin area, and armpits.
The toxins are purged in the form of perspiration. Anti-perspirant, as the name clearly indicates, prevents you from perspiring, thereby inhibiting the body from purging toxins from below the armpits. These toxins do not just magically disappear. Instead, the body deposits them in the lymph nodes below the arms since it cannot sweat them out. Nearly all breast cancer tumors occur in the upper outside quadrant of the breast area. This is precisely where the lymph nodes are located.Additionally, men are less likely (but not completely exempt) to develop breast cancer prompted by anti-perspirant usage because most of the anti-perspirant product is caught in their hair and is not directly applied to the skin. Women who apply anti-perspirant right after shaving increase the risk further because shaving causes almost imperceptible nicks in the skin which give the chemicals entrance into the body from the armpit area.
PLEASE pass this along to anyone you care about.
Breast cancer is becoming frighteningly common. This awareness may save lives.
If you are skeptical about these findings, I urge you to do some research for yourself. You might just arrive at the same conclusions.
Thanks to Vicki, of Canada for passing this along
Breast Cancer
Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Mammogram Breasts
___ ___
A Fun reminder........
For years and years they told me,
Be careful of your breasts.
Don't ever squeeze or bruise them.
give them monthly tests.
So I heeded all their warnings,
And protected them by law.
Guarded them very carefully,
And I always wore my bra.
30 years of astute care,
My gyno, Dr. Pruitt,
Said I should get a Mammogram
"O.K," I said, "let's do it."
"Stand up here real close" she said,
(She got my boob in line),
"And tell me when it hurts," she said,
"Ah yes! Right there, that's fine."
She stepped upon a pedal,
I could not believe my eyes!
A plastic plate came slamming down,
My hooter's in a vise!
My skin was stretched and mangled,
underneath my chin.
My poor boob was being squashed,
To Swedish Pancake thin.
Excruciating pain I felt,
Within it's vise-like grip.
A prisoner in this vicious thing,
My poor defenseless tit!
"Take a deep breath" she said to me,
Who does she think she's kidding?!?
My chest is mashed in her machine,
And woozy I am getting.
"There, that's good," I heard her say,
The room was slowly swaying.)
"Now, let's have a go at the other one."
Have mercy, I was praying.
It squeezed me from both up and down,
squeezed me from both sides.
I'll bet SHE'S never had this done,
HER tender little hide.
Next time that they make me do this,
I will request a blindfold.
I have no wish to see again,
My knockers getting steam rolled.
If I had no problem when I came in,
I surely have one now.
If there had been a cyst in there,
It would have gone "ker-pow!"
This machine was created by a man,
Of this, I have no doubt.
I'd like to stick his balls in there,
And see how THEY come out!
OK gals, now that you have had your laugh, remember... Breast Cancer Awareness
... Go have those boobs checked out and stay healthy!
Thanks Jeanette for this snippet of healthy humour

Heath & Wellness Day is January 3rd
Did you make a New Year's Resolution to drop a few pounds, ditch a bad habit or enjoy a deeper night's sleep? Check out these helpful suggestions for success.
Start by establishing a week-by-week strategy. It's important to take small steps toward a goal because if you can see that you're making progress, you're more encouraged to continue.
You'll need a well-defined goal to get you there. Goals provide you with a measuring stick and a clear sense of direction.
Try following this plan - step by step, of course - and turn those dreams into health goals that happen.
1. TAKE STOCK
You can't boost your health until you know where you're at now). Have you visited your physician in the past year for a checkup? If not, set up an appointment to chat about the health changes you would like to make. The following tests will help give you the big picture.
Blood pressure check - Get one at every physical.
Clinical breast exam - An annual breast exam and mammogram aren't mandatory until you hit age 50, but you can ask for them anyway.
Pap smear - Your doctor should take one at age 18 or when you become sexually active and and continue every one to three years thereafter to check for cervical cancer.
Height and weight check - A change in height may be one of the first signs of osteoporosis. Your height and weight combined are used to calculate your body mass index (BMI) and determine how far you are from your healthiest body weight.
Over 50 years old or post-menopausal? - You'll need some additional tests to screen for high cholesterol, colon cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. Mammograms are also recommended every one to two years for women aged 50 to 69.
Give yourself a pat on the back when you get the results. Congratulate yourself on what you're doing right, whether it's eating balanced meals or nodding off for eight hours a night. Then note what requires work. Do you need to shrink portion sizes to reach your BMI? Will adding weight training to your workout build your bones and offset osteoporosis?
EXERCISE: List the Top 3 health concerns that you would like to address, based on recent health tests.
2. EXAMINE YOUR MOTIVES
Ask yourself what's pushing you to make a change, besides your test results. Is it a goal you've assigned yourself, or are you stubbing out cigarettes because your partner won't stop harping? Goals that are personally rewarding tend to be better. Make sure you're not just responding to other people's desires.
Also, think about what's keeping you from changing. When you're about to raid the cookie jar or pour yourself another drink, stop and think: Are you feeling empty? Anxious? Lonely? Agitated? Ponder where these feelings are coming from and why they're arising. Gaining insight into your indulgent behaviours will keep you on track and tell you whether you need professional help to reach your goals. If you suspect that binge eating is connected to low self-esteem, for example, it might be time for therapy.
EXERCISE: Write down what's motivating you to make healthy changes in your life now. For example, is your energy level low?
3. LOOK TO THE PAST
If you've tried and failed before - and who hasn't? - a rear-view look can help you sort out a winning strategy this time. Where were you in your life when you set that goal for Run for the Cure, for instance, and how realistic was it? Maybe you realized that 5:30 a.m. runs weren't good last time and that's why you didn't make it. Pick a better time that works for you.
If you've never tried to achieve a health goal before, reflect on a time when you pulled off another amazing feat. Perhaps you went back to school while raising two small children - how did you pull that off? Drum up that same determination for your new goal. Also, consider finding a health mentor - someone who has aimed for the same goals. Tag along with her/him, ask questions and use her/his energy to help you.
EXERCISE: Think about obstacles that derailed your past health goals. Note how you plan to avoid or deal with them this time around.
4. GET REAL
Do your homework so you know how long it might take to find a less stressful job, lose 20 pounds or work up to 60 minutes of physical activity a day. This will help you avoid what Dr. Janet Polivy, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto, calls the "false hope syndrome." This happens when you unrealistically think, I'll start exercising and, within days, have more energy, loose-fitting clothes, a new boyfriend and a new job. The problem? "If the rewards you expect are not forthcoming, your motivation will start to slip," she says.
Building your goals on dreams rather than on reality could set them up for a fall.
To stay grounded, list the positive and negative aspects of your proposed goal to, say, start running. If it's to feel better, sleep soundly, have more energy and improve your health, that's great. Remember for every change, there are going to be negative elements. For instance, maybe your running plans mean you won't be home to watch Friends. Create a strategy to downplay each negative and, as Bing Crosby used to sing, accentuate the positive.
EXERCISE: Write down how long it took people you know to reach similar health goals. Are your targets realistic by comparison?
5. THINK SMART
Now that you've examined your health, motives, track record and expectations, you're ready to set specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely (SMART) goals. Why timely? Establishing deadlines offers a focus and avoids the I'll-start-tomorrow dance. Just make your deadlines achievable - think about your goals and the time you have to dedicate to them. For example, is going from zero to 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day by next week really going to happen?
EXERCISE: Establish one achievable step toward your goal that you can do today or this week.
6. MAKE IT HAPPEN
Develop an action plan to put your goals in motion. Build in a support team of friends and family, as well as a professional if you've never tried to make a health change before. Want to design a more effective workout, for example? Think about hiring a personal trainer who can map out a detailed plan. Also, remember to break down your goals into bite-size pieces and decide what your 10 per cent target is. Need more sleep? Start by tucking into bed 20 minutes earlier on three nights of your first week.
Put your plans on paper, too. Writing a contract with yourself makes your goals more concrete. Outline your goals, what you're willing to do to make them happen and timelines and then sign the document. For additional motivation, get a friend or family member to sign it.
EXERCISE: List three allies to help you achieve your goals, whether by setting an example, providing support or hiding the potato chips.
7. STAY ON TRACK
If you achieve some of your initial goals, it's easy to become complacent. By following a week-by-week approach you have one key to long-term goals -- that of monitoring your progress. If you've made SMART goals, you'll see improvements that will motivate you further.
THREE STAY MOTIVATED STRATEGIES
1. Pretend it's Thanksgiving. Write down three to five things you did well each day to see how far you've come.
2. Act like Napoleon Honor your victories, like the diminutive dictator. Create a collage of your goals and related images. Then add photos of yourself achieving them. Soon, images of your accomplishments will eclipse your goals.
3. Reward yourself. Incentives reinforce your goals and make you less likely to indulge in bad habits.
For example to loose weight your strategy might be as follows:
Week 1: Work on sipping eight glasses of water a day.
Week 2: Concentrate on moving around more often.
Week 3: Eat breakfast before leaving home.
Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
Closure Patent foramen ovale is an opening between the right atrium and left atrium, the top chambers of the heart. This opening is present in all infants, but usually closes after birth. If it doesn't grow closed, it may allow blood to flow between the top chambers of the heart. Blood flow through the PFO is most likely to occur when more pressure is temporarily exerted in the chest, such as while coughing, sneezing or straining to pass a stool. Blood that flows through the PFO has not been cleansed or filled with oxygen by the lungs. As a result, debris in the blood (e.g. clots) can lodge in the brain, causing stroke, or in other areas of the heart, causing a heart attack.
Closing the PFO usually involves open-heart surgery with its associated risks and complications. Instead, many patients with a PFO are treated with blood thinners to prevent clots from forming. But continual use of blood thinners can cause other disorders within the body. A less-invasive procedure to close the PFO was developed in which a special device is passed through a thin, flexible tube (catheter) and navigated to the heart where it is put in place. While this was generally safer than open-heart surgery, results were mixed.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK ALONE
From F. Daniel Rochman MD
Let's say it's 6:15 p.m. and you're driving home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home; unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
You've been trained in CPR but the guy that taught the course neglected to tell you how to perform it on yourself. Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seemed to be in order. Without help, the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds! left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.
A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest, and a cough must be repeated about every 2 seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squee! ze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.
Tell as many other people as possible about this, it could save their lives!
