Morley Seaver

Music Writing (or related) Experience

Mini-bio

Without a doubt, besides his family, the major passion in Morley Seaver’s life is music. “I literally cannot recall a time where music was not part of my life,” he says. “I remember listening to the radio or records my mother would play as early on as three or four years of age.”

Growing up with a wide range of music thanks to older siblings as well as varied interests by his parents, Seaver developed an appreciation for all styles of music. The purchase of his first record at about the age of 7 (a single by The Five Man Electrical Band) set off a lifetime of music collecting.

Upon graduation of school, Seaver got a job at a record chain in Ottawa, becoming store manager in less than a year. The six-year stint was an eye-opening experience. “It was one of the greatest times of my life,” he says. “I got to check out many more genres of music than I might have had I not had first-hand opportunity. For instance, I developed a great love of reggae which I had never heard before, along with a lot of the great art-rock bands like Japan, Magazine, Classix Nouveaux.”

A few years later he began writing music reviews, first for newspapers and then for magazines. His love and knowledge of metal and hard rock allowed him to contribute to Caustic Truths and Snaggletooth, a pair of hard music magazines from Toronto, as well as several established music websites, antiMUSIC and NowOnTour. He also became a featured interview columnist on antiMUSIC where he has spoken with artists as diverse as DevilDriver and Imogen Heap.

He has written thousands of music reviews and interviewed many musicians. A partial list of his interviews include: Linda Perry, Paul Rodgers, Glenn Hughes, Cradle of Filth, Bif Naked, Judas Priest, Godsmack, Kim Mitchell, Stone Sour, HorrorPops, Green Carnation, Queensryche, Molly Hatchet, Blackmore's Night, My Ruin, Crisis, Scarling, Billy Sheehan, Concrete Blonde, Carl Palmer of ELP, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, Prairie Oyster, The Family Brown, and many more.

True to his diverse listening habits, a check of his favorite bands shows many styles and eras: Cradle of Filth, Bjork, Battle of Mice, Made out of Babies, HorrorPops, KISS, The Blood Brothers, The Distillers (RIP - sob) Imogen Heap, Green Carnation, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Nekromantix, Bruce Springsteen, Concrete Blonde, David Bowie, Third World, Swollen Members, Jay-Z, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Rainbow/Dio, Whitesnake, Steely Dan, ELP, YES, Lauryn Hill, Tupac, Alice in Chains, Linda Perry, Slipknot, Blue Rodeo, Tom Jones, Garth Brooks and much, much more.

A veteran of hundreds of concerts, Seaver has experienced the live show of many of these artists. “Seeing Cradle of Filth for the first time was pretty cool,” he says, “considering they’re my favorite band. David Lee Roth-era Van Halen from six rows away was a show that will always be in my Top 5. I saw Twisted Sister and Queensryche at a small club with an audience of about 50 and it was one of the most energizing things I’ve ever experienced. I went to a Tom Jones concert with my Mom and was blown away. More recently, I saw the HorrorPops and that was probably the most fun show I’ve ever attended. All of that pales in comparison to two magical shows from the early ‘80s. U2 was the closest thing I’ve ever had to a religious experience (The Unforgettable Fire tour). They were unbelievable. And the Bruce Springsteen show from The River tour in ’81 was a life-altering moment. You can take all of the shows I’ve seen before or since and collectively they cannot add up to the phenomenal power of that singular concert. It was beyond mere words.”

Seaver is very familiar with all styles of music with the exception of jazz and opera. He is available for any and all writing assignments. He is quick and reliable. As he works from home, he is able to accommodate any subject interviews at any time of the day (especially good for European interviews).
