Archie Batease
Archie G. Batease 1894-1968
Archie Batease, my grandfather, never talked much about his
his ancestors. Neither would his sister, Birdie Batease. She
would always retort, "let sleeping dogs lie!" and if my
grandfather was questioned too much he would say he was of French
Canadian descent. But over the years we got bits and pieces
of information that amounted to what I term now "our family lore"
In today's mind if you say the word "ranger" you think of a
law enforcement agent such as the "Texas Ranger" or "Forest
Ranger." My grandfather's ancestor, John Battist, was an Indian
Ranger, Rev. War. The "indian" was dropped, and to keep him
important in the family tree, he became a law enforcement officer
of some sort. One branch of the family had him a Canadian Mounty.
Our branch had him a constable or a sheriff in the Montreal area
of Canada. This tidbit of information became very important later
in our research. (When you question your elders, take notes and
remember every word can be a clue that later can become invaluable
in your research - a lesson Ron and I well learned.)
After the Revoluntionary War some Abenaki stayed in Canada and some
settled in upstate New York, Upper Vermont, New Hampshire and
northern Maine. They were termed "the invisible people" because
they were so good at hiding their identity to survive in the white
settlers world. Unfortunately they hid too good for which their
decendants now have to fight for recognition in the State of
Vermont and with the U.S. Government. (Perhaps if more of us
did our genealogies we could help put the puzzle together).
Then in the early 1900's the eugenics study hit Vermont and made
the Abenaki people remaining, shiver with fear. I am not going
to write about this study. Anyone can learn about it on the web.
My comment is that it closely resembled Hitler's thoughts.
Another eugenics study was done in my hometown of Granville, NY.
Anyone can read a copy of it in the town library. It was done
on the Mohican (or Mohegan) indians that settled in the town.
This is the beginning of my lineage back to my Abenaki ancestor.
I publish it with respect and pride. I am 65 now and my one
regret is that I didn't learn of the connection until later in
life when my health prevents me from personally knowing my
"Abenaki brothers and sisters" and becoming more active in their
culture. (2008 - lorriecarr@gmail.com)
