Thoughts On The Last Days

Christ will return:

In these days of terrorism and economic uncertainty, many are wondering just how much longer the world can keep from being visited by tragedy. Human life is no longer valued as it once was....witness the increase in violent crime and murder and the wholesale slaughter of unborn infants [by legal abortion]. Governments teeter on the brink of destruction while plague, famine, and disease decimate whole populations. What is our hope? That is assuming, of course, that we do indeed have any hope!

Let me inject a note of optimism at this point. We DO have a hope! At least, those who are awaiting the return of Christ with eager expectation definitely DO have a great hope!

As to those who are NOT looking for Christ's return, what do the "last days" have to offer them? To answer this we need to go to the Scripture. Read the following from Matthew 24:37-39 and 24:44 ----

"But as the days of Noe [Noah] were, so shall the coming of the Son of man be.
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."

We have all read about Noah's Flood wherein all life, with the exception of Noah and his immediate family, was destroyed by a world-wide flood. [Some critics claim that it was a "local" flood but we disagree. Hopefully, we can deal with this question later on]. Notice some comparisons between the "days of Noah" and the "last days" when Christ shall return.

1. Life was going on as usual. No one, evidently, was expecting a global tragedy to overwhelm the earth. They were "marrying" and "eating and drinking". Please understand that Christ is not condemning these normal practices! He is merely saying that people's attention will be given wholly to the everyday affairs of life...to the exclusion of watching for His Coming. We must, of course, conduct our everyday affairs...no one in his right mind is asking us to go to a mountaintop and wait for the Second Coming! However, the point is that we MUST make time for spiritual things and not be given over completely to materialism and the pursuit of worldly pleasure.

2. Chirst will return "when we think not." I know....we have heard it all our lives! Preachers have told us that the Second Coming is near! And we still haven't seen it! Not to worry! It WILL occur....when we have stopped watching for Him and turned our attention and affections to the things around us....our jobs, our possessions, and a thousand other things! Christ is coming for a PREPARED people....that is, for a people who are ready to meet Him and who WATCH daily for His Return.

3. His coming will be a time of judgment on those who are NOT prepared!
