The Word of God

A primary objective for studying the Bible is to learn about God. For humanity, what is the most important characteristic or attribute of God? If you guessed "His love", you guessed right! One of the most well-known verses in the entire Bible is John 3:16. And what does it tell us about God? Let's read it to find out:
"For God so LOVED THE WORLD, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Yes, God LOVED you and me enough to give His only begotten Son that we might have eternal life! Isn't that reason enough to want to know more about Him and to love and serve Him in return?

Another reason to study the Bible is to learn about eternal life....and how we may obtain it. Let's read some scripture which sheds light on this issue - John 5:39:
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."
This verse points us to Jesus Christ....the only One who can give eternal life! In fact, all scripture points to Him! Read the Old Testament. There you will find about 300 prophecies which foretell His coming to earth to save man from his sins. All of these "Messianic" prophecies have been fulfilled to the letter! Read the New Testament. Every page testifies of Him! The four Gospels, the Epistles, the Revelation....each and every book tells of His life, death, resurrection, and His coming again!

Jesus has many names....each of which portray a special facet of His divine personality. He is called the Lamb of God [because of His sacrificial death for man's sin], the Good Shepherd, the Door, the Vine, and many other things. But one name we'd like to dwell on for a moment is that of "the Word." Go to the Gospel of John and read John 1:1 -
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Here the divine nature of Christ is revealed and made plain. Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Trinity! He is NOT MERELY "a good man" or "a great teacher"....although, of course, He was both! He is the only begotten Son of God. Note that the Word [Jesus] was "in the beginning"....that is, He existed from all eternity [and this can be said of no mortal man]. Also, note that the Word WAS God....not simply a good man!
