Hypertension Homepage

Hypertension is a chronic disorder that affects more than 50 million Americans. It is a reversible risk factor for cardiovascular disease, renal failure, stroke, myocardial infarction, angina, heart failure, or death from a cardiovascular event. The prevalence of hypertension increases with age. Gender and ethnic background play a role in hypertension. 17% of white women, 26% of white men, 37% of black women, and 44% of black men between the ages of 35 to 45 are affected with hypertension. In the elderly population (>65 years), the gender differences are less apparent, with 63% of whites and 76% of blacks affected by the disease.
