This series of small grow-out and breeding tanks for my killies are
what I affectionately call 'tanklets'.
Corridor view of customized tanks, made for a previous hobbyist
who has decided to scale down to maintain spousal harmony.... his reduction
is my additions ;o)
There's yet another 8 such tanks awaiting to join in the fun.
|
There is a 'slot' in the low barrier wall along the corridor and
these tanklets are to the left of it. On the right of this 'slot',
is a daphnia culturing tank with green-water, under stacks of take-away
containers housing young fry.
In this pic, the top tank houses about 20 juvenile Aplochelius Kirchmayeri or Gao Killie. Their parents are looks like this. Below that, is a 1-foot cube tanklet, holding newly purchased plants and I prefer safe-sex... urm... safe-practice, I mean... and quarantine not just fish but for plants as well! Fresh water has since replaced the first fill and anubias, frogbits and an un-ID'ed plant was added to 'season' the water. Snails and paramecium were added to speed up micro-organism count. |
Since none of these tanklets will be aerated or additional filtration
via canisters or Hang-On-Tank {HOT) filters, I rely heavily on plants and
the principles of a mini-eco to maintain balance.
Floating at the surface is a small Pistia stratiotes or Water lettuce, which is considered a weed North America. Beside it is a nuphar-like un-ID'ed plant. |
There are 2 thermometers at the front and in case anyone is wondering,
it's to settle a doubt that arised from this
thread regarding low-maintenance setups.
On the left is a mainland-made cheapo while the right is a Japanese-made
'Lab-grade' 0-100ºC thermometer.
|
x | The pics will tell ya that even cheapo thermos can give 'Lab-grade'
ones a run for their money... of course YMMV.
27.25º against 27.50º Celcius... 'elmike', you happy now? ;o) Ambient temperature in the shaded corridor was between 29~30ºC
with overcast sky and no wind. It's definitely warmer outside.
|
Just for the fun of it, I'm growing emersed hybrid echinodorus
in an 'elephant' vessel, which drains water through it's 'mouth'.
Substrate combo of clay, coco-peat and home-made compost, is topped up with 8-mesh gravel, locally known as Lonestar. |
Keep 'em fingers wet..
