Shugenja

A shugenja is a member of the Samurai caste, a holy person dedicated to the Kami and the pursuit of divine magic. They are treated with respect by all members of society, from samurai to peasant. In return a shugenja normally gives aid, both spiritual and physical, and instruction to those who desire or need it. While they have some training in fighting, the choice of armor and weapons is limited. The main power of a shugenja is the spells they can cast to enlighten, aid, and protect themselves and others.

Class Bonuses

  1. Spells - A Shugenja has the abilitie to cast spells. See XP chart for total Spell Points and when they gain a new spell level to cast from.

  2. Void Healing - A Shugenja who does not normally have access to the Healing spells can do whats called a Void Healing. By Spending a Void point, they can heal up to 5 DP per caster level. A regular SD roll is needed, and if a CF is rolled they suffer no damage but still lose the Void point. Example: Fumiko can not cast Healing spells since her gods Sphere does not cover it but the fighter in her party needs some healing badly. Fumiko uses one of her Void points to cast a healing spell,  thus granting her the ability to heal her friend.

  3. Ritual - A Shugenja can perform marriages, christenings, funeral rites, observances of holy days, and purifications. The last of these can be effective at lifting curses and warding off evil influences. A Shugenja has a 5% per level to remove any curse when performing a purification ritual. When purifying to ward off evil influences, the shugenja can sanctify an area with a radius of 10 feet (100 square feet). At the end of the ritual, everyone within the area gains a +1 Dmg and +1 SC bonus when fighting evil spirits while the shugenja remains in the purified circle.

  4. Meditation - Is a state of deep concentration. By meditating, the shugenja focuses and regains his/her energies. One hour of uninterrupted meditation is as restful as two hours of sleep. While meditating, the shugenja is oblivious to hunger, thirst, heat, and cold. They are still conscious and aware of their surroundings, however, so they do not suffer any penalties on surprise or initiative rolls.

  5. Ki Defense - A Shugenja can pull upon their Ki energy to help defend themselves during a dangerous situation. This comes in the form of them being able to gain a +3 SC towards any check. This lasts for a number of rounds equal to their level or 1 minute/per level outside of combat. A Shugenja can invoke this Ki energy a number of times per day equal to their level.

  6. Prayer Paper - This ability uses the Shugenja's belief and is a method of using prayer as a weapon. The Shugenja inscribes mystic prayers on paper and these work to hinder supernatural, demonic, tainted, or undead creatures and can cause their destruction. Using prayer paper requires spending a Void point each use, and range of the paper is line of sight. The paper will move against the wind and go around obstacles to reach their target.

Downsides -

A Shugenja lives by certain rules imposed by their religion. They can not eat meat; they must refrain from violence whenever possible (especially killing); and they must avoid immoderate drinking and eating. Failing to follow these rules will result in some type of punishment for the character, chosen by the forum leader or GM. This can be in the form of losing spell casting abilities for the day, loss of honor, or a special penance. It could also be as simple as seeking meditation in a shrine to atone for the sin.
