Thousands take to the streets
in protest
as war begins

Tens of thousands of anti-war
protesters
filled streets and squares, blocked
roads,
walked out of schools and universities
and
temporarily stopped work yesterday.
Trade unionists, students, hospital
staff,
civil servants and students joined
hundreds
of noisy, spontaneous demonstrations
across
the country. A crowd of more
than 5,000 gathered
in Parliament Square, London,
festooning
statues with posters and stringing
up a "Stop
the War" banner in Whitehall.
Police cordoned off the area
immediately
in front of Westminster, but
demonstrators
blocked streets around parliament.
Whistles,
drums, megaphones and chants
penetrated the
soundproofing of MPs' offices
overlooking
the area.

The anti-war movement is picking
up steam
nationwide as Americans voice
their disapproval
of a possible war with Iraq.
Already 124
US cities and counties have passed
resolutions
against the war including San
Francisco,
Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore
and Washington.
The resolutions are considered
a symbolic
effort to protest against President
Bush's
call for possible military action
against
Iraq. Leading the anti-war movement
is Cities
for Peace, a national coalition
of locally
elected officials and citizens
working to
avoid a potential US confrontation
with Iraq.

【ニューヨーク５日】米国によるイラク攻撃への緊迫感が高まる中、対イラク戦争に反対する学生デモが５日、欧米諸国を中心に世界各地で行われ、大学生や高校生が教室を飛び出して「戦争はやめて」と訴えた。
反戦デモは、２月の世界一斉デモに触発された学生らが企画。インターネットを通じて世界に呼び掛け、米国やカナダ、フランス、スペイン、オーストラリアなどで行われた。
【ロンドン】英国の各都市で５日、イラク攻撃に反対する中学生ら１０代前半の若者たちが授業を放棄して街頭デモを行った。全国で数千人が参加したとみられている。ロンドンでは数百人がブレア首相の公邸に押しかけた。少年たちが公邸の門をよじ登ろうとしたため警官が出動する騒ぎとなった。
デモに参加したのは１３歳から１６歳の中学生がほとんどで、Ｅメールなどで連絡を取り合ったという。首相公邸前に集まった若者たちは「石油のための戦争はやめろ」「選挙権が持てる大人になったらブレアなんかに投票しないぞ」などと叫んで気勢を上げた。
英国では国連の承認なしのイラク攻撃に国民の７割以上が反対し、先月１５日にはロンドンで１００万人規模の反戦デモが行われるなど、ブレア首相は苦しい立場に追い込まれている。

米国のイラク攻撃に反対する集会やデモが１５日、世界各地であった。時差に従って、日本やアジア諸国から始まった反戦の輪は、ロンドン、パリ、ローマなど欧州各都市での大規模な行動へと広がり、ニューヨークの国連本部前などで集会が開かれる米国にまでつながる。英メディアによると、計６０カ国、６００都市で約１０００万人が参加し、６０年代のベトナム戦争時を上回る規模になる見込みという。

Huge waves of demonstrations
not seen since
the Vietnam war jammed more than
600 towns
and cities around the world over
the weekend
as protesters from Tasmania to
Iceland marched
against war in Iraq. Up to 30
million people
demonstrated worldwide, including
around
6 million in Europe, according
to figures
from organisers and police, although
most
conceded there were too many
people in too
many places to count.
Action began on Friday when 150,000
protesters
filed into Melbourne, with thousands
more
gathering across the rest of
Australia and
in New Zealand. Protests were
still swelling
yesterday in Sydney, San Francisco
and in
Oman - where 200 women filled
the streets
in the sultanate's first all-female
demonstration.
Smaller demonstrations choked
streets from
Cape Town, Dhaka and Havana to
Bangkok.
Tens of thousands filled the
streets of Iraq.
In Baghdad, students, housewives
and volunteer
militia, many waving Kalashnikovs
and giant
pictures of Saddam Hussein, were
presided
over by leaders of the ruling
Ba'ath party
and watched over by heavily armed
police.

全世界を駆けめぐったイラク攻撃反対デモの一環で、１６日、米サンフランシスコでは市人口の３分の１を超す約２５万人が、市街をデモ行進した。
ベトナム戦争の時代の反戦歌手ジョーン・バエズさんや、同時多発テロの直後に大統領に強い権限を与える法案に議会でただ一人反対したバーバラ・リー下院議員も、ともに坂の街を歩いた。
市庁舎前で行われた集会では、朝鮮戦争に従軍した元兵士（７３）が「戦争でもうけようとするやつらが戦争を始める。愚を繰り返してはならない」と訴えた。
前日に地球を一周したデモの熱気を受けて「爆撃するのに十分な証拠を見せられていない。世界中の数百万人が同じ思いを抱いている」という発言もあった。

元米空軍将校「核さえ使われかねない」 銀座で反戦演説

元米軍将校のトッド・ローデスさん（２９）が１５日昼、東京・銀座で、「米国市民の多くもこの戦争に反対している。核兵器さえ使われかねない」と、米国のイラク攻撃反対を訴えた。
原水爆禁止日本協議会（原水協）を事務局とした街頭演説で、マイクを握った。
デトロイト生まれで、大学在学中に軍の訓練を受け、９８年にはニュージャージー州の基地で中東に出動する輸送機への兵員や装備品の積み込みを指揮。その後、空軍大尉として新兵の募集担当になったが、「高校を出たばかりの若者を戦争に送り込む仕事」に疑問を感じ、０１年８月に除隊したという。

反戦デモ無視できず…英外相

【ロンドン】ストロー英外相は１７日、英ＢＢＣラジオのインタビューで、対イラク武力行使に反対するデモ活動が世界各地で行われた事実について、「我々は世論を十分に考慮する必要がある」と述べ、米国とともに軍事行動へ傾く英政府として、世論の抵抗に一定の理解を示す考えを明らかにした。
同外相は、「ロンドンで１５日に行われたデモは、英国の民主主義史上、おそらく最大のものだった」と論評し、世論の支持を得ない軍事作戦の発動は、「極めて困難だ」と語った。
同外相の発言は、ライス米大統領補佐官が１６日、「人には異議申し立ての権利があるが、（フセイン）政権の本質を思い出してみる価値がある」などと述べ、反戦デモにとらわれずに、武力行使の準備を進めるべきだとした米政府の歩調と微妙に異なるものだ。

「反戦の波」、米国にも １５０都市でデモや集会

米国のイラク攻撃に反対し１５日に世界中をめぐった「反戦の波」は、ブッシュ政権のひざ元の米国に及んだ。東海岸のニューヨークから西海岸のロサンゼルスまで全米約１５０の都市でデモや集会が行われた。ニューヨーク・マンハッタンでは１５日、約３８万人（主催者発表）が集まった。米国で、戦争前にこれほど大規模な反戦運動が起きたのは初めて。
ホワイトハウスは同日、「ブッシュ大統領はなお平和解決を希望しているが、それは（イラクの）サダム・フセインにかかっている」とする声明を発表した。
主催者の発表では、ロンドンでの参加者は結局、２００万人を超えたという。１６日もオーストラリアやタイなどで大規模な反戦デモがあった。世界の参加者は、米国でデモが始まる前に英メディアが伝えた「６０カ国で１０００万人」をかなり超えた可能性もあり、ベトナム戦争当時を上回る史上最大規模に膨らんだ。（02/16）

Tens of thousands
of demonstrators in San Francisco
protested
Sunday against any war with Iraq
in a daylong
rally that attracted celebrities
and politicians.
Police said the demonstration
early on was
largely peaceful, but by evening
a group
of "dissident protesters"
not far
from the main gathering threw
rocks, bottles,
and bricks at police. Several
police officers
were hurt, a police spokesman
said.
Other details were not immediately
available.
San Francisco police estimated
150,000 people
turned up at Justin Herman Plaza
in midmorning.
About 50,000 people attended
an afternoon
rally at the Civic Center Plaza,
police said.
Protesters carried signs reading,
"Bay
Area United Against War,"
"The
World Says No to War" and
"Jail
Bush." At least one person
waved the
French national flag.
"We are here to say, 'Thank
you, France,
Thank you, Germany, Thank you,
China' and
'Thank you, Sen. [Robert] Byrd,'"
said
David Harris, a founder of the
draft-resistance
movement during the Vietnam War.
