‘Going to the Playoffs Shawl’

I made this shawl while the Carolina Panthers beat the Atlanta Falcons in January of 2006, to win their spot as a Wild Card team for their division. It was quite a win, and I think I should design something else for each playoff game, in case it’s my crocheting that’s keeping our boys playing so well! –grin-

I used worsted weight yarn (4 balls of Red Heart Soft) and a size K hook, so that the fabric wouldn’t be too stiff. Experiment with yarn and hook combinations until you find one you like! This is another shawl that starts easy and keeps going until you’re ready to end it, so yarn and hook size really don’t matter, as long as they work well together. I’ve also done one in RH Plush, with a size N hook, and it turned out very nicely, indeed.

Row 1: ch 7, dc in 7th ch from hook. Ch 1, turn (1 V-stitch made)

Row 2: sc in turning dc, 5 dc in space, sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 from previous row. Ch 5, turn. (1 shell made)

Row 3: dc in turning sc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, sc in 3rd dc of shell. Ch 2, skip next 2 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in last sc. Ch 1, turn. (2 V-stitches made)

Row 4: sc in turning dc, 5 dc in next ch-2 space, skip next ch-2 space, sc in next sc, skip next ch-2 space, 5 dc in next ch-2 space. Sc in 3rd ch of beg ch of previous row. Ch 5, turn. (two shells made)

Row 5: dc in turning sc, * ch 2, sc in 3rd dc of shell group, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next sc*, repeat from * to * once. Ch 1, turn. (3 V-stitches made)

Row 6: sc in turning dc, 5 dc in next ch-2 space, * skip next ch-2 space, sc in next sc, skip next ch-2 space, 5 dc in next ch 2 space *. Repeat from * to * once. End with sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 from previous row. Ch 5, turn (3 shells made)

Row 7: dc in turning sc, * ch 2, sc in 3rd dc of shell group, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next sc*, repeat from * to * twice. Ch 1, turn. (4 V-stitches made)

Row 8: sc in turning dc, 5 dc in next ch-2 space, * skip next ch-2 space, sc in next sc, skip next ch-2 space, 5 dc in next ch 2 space *. Repeat from * to * twice. End with sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 from previous row. Ch 5, turn (4 shells made)

Row 9: dc in turning sc, * ch 2, sc in 3rd dc of shell group, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next sc*, repeat from * to * 3 times. Ch 1, turn. (5 V-stitches made)

Row 10: sc in turning dc, 5 dc in next ch-2 space, * skip next ch-2 space, sc in next sc, skip next ch-2 space, 5 dc in next ch 2 space *. Repeat from * to * 3 times. End with sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 from previous row. Ch 5, turn (5 shells made)

Repeat rows 9 and 10 alternately until shawl is desired length. With each 2-row repeat you will increase 1 V-stitch on the V-stitch rows, and 1 shell on the shell rows. This creates a regular triangular shawl. I finished it off with a simple row of single crochet along the long edge (2 sc in each ch-2 space across, finish off), and tassels on the shorter edges.

When the shawl is finished, a fringe of nice thick tassels looks very nice. I hang mine from the ‘point’ of the diamonds (the sc at the bottom of the V-stitches) along the edges.

I’m still working on the draping shawl, but that’s coming along nicely, so hopefully it will be ready soon!

Here’s a link to the picturetrail album I have my photos in. I’ll upload more pictures as I have the shawls completed and ready for the pics.

If it asks you for a password, it’s happyhooker

I hope you have as much fun making these as I have had!

Pictures will be coming along shortly, of several of my finished shawls. Anyone who makes them and wants their pictures included, please let me know, and I'll do my best! :)
