Teachers are always lecturing us about being treated equally. Well I had something to say the other day about my views. I was told: “You’re not going to win this argument, go back to class.”

Teachers are starting to tell us we aren’t aloud to wear a bandana. When I asked why the answer I got was: “It’s against the rules.”

Our school agenda tells us that the dress code is there:
a) ‘to prevent embarrassing situations’.
What embarrassment are people going to get from wearing a bandana? The agenda also states, under the Student Leadership column:
b) ‘…gives the students the opportunity to make the school the best it can be.’
We’ve been taught year after year to express ourselves. Different people have different ways to express themselves. Some of us do it through appearances; she wears long pants, he has green hair, she wears a lot of make up, he has Nike sneakers, I wear a bandana. By express our selves in the way we dress we’re actually obeying the school rules.

Our school lets the people who attend wear hair elastics and other hair accessories. A bandana is classified under Hair Accessories. This is again, still obeying school rules. There are some teacher at our school who wear wigs, and even some students who have fake hair. That isn’t disobeying school rules. Hair Accessories are aloud. This means, there is nothing wrong with a bandana.

Rules are made so no body gets hurt. On the high way, there’s a certain speed limit for a reason, there’s rules in school saying no body raises an arm unless it’s to help or ask a question. Why? So no body is harmed. A bandana is not harming anyone.

Every one wants to prevent embarrassing situations and keep them selves from being humiliated. Appearances seem to be a big hit on that list of things that could go wrong. Hair, we use hair spray to keep frizzy down, or to hold the style we want. I and a few other bandana users have a bandana to keep all that, it’s almost like a non-scented but visible hairspray. I’m keeping my self from embarrassment and still following school rules.

Expressing our selves; school rule. Being able to wear hair accessories; school rule. Keep our self from embarrassing situations; school rule. I’m obeying the school rules by continuing to wearing my bandana.

So in the end, if the school is making a new regulation on bandanas, they should find out what rules they are actually putting out. I think the teacher and people who take part in making the school policies should figure out what they are doing and why it’s against school rules to wear a bandanna. At the moment they are going back on their own words.
