The Gallery

There are 1,013 species of butterflies recorded for Peninsular Malaysia according to Corbet & Pendlebury, 4th edition. This figure does not include species found in the Bornean states of Sabah and Sarawak which do not occur in Peninsular Malaysia (for Sabah and Sarawak butterflies visit Mohd Fairus Jalil's website.) Over a period of 17 years (1982–1999), I have managed to photograph about 200 of the 1,013 species. This number (200) makes up roughly 70 per cent of the more commonly encountered species.

I have arranged the photos as systematically and as best I could according to the taxonomic order that I see in the standard texts on Malaysian butterflies. I have also endeavoured as best I could to properly identify the species shown in this Gallery. However, in many cases a positive ID is not possible sometimes due to the quality of the photos, but more often due to the similarity in appearance of “conjoining” species. Please send me an email if you find any species wrongly identified and I will endeavour to make a correction as soon as possible.

For identifying some of the “difficult” species, I have had help from Dr Laurence G. Kirton, Simon Chan, Khew Sin Khoon and Mohd Fairus Jalil. Simon has also contributed articles and several photos of species taken in Singapore to this website. It is my ambition “to grow” this website so that it becomes a fairly significant online resource on Malaysian butterfly species, and towards this end I welcome help and contributions from fellow butterfly enthusiasts.
