A short note about me

Although I took up photography as a hobby when I was about 15, it was not until much later in life, after acquiring the necessary "macro" equipment in 1982, that I began to capture living butterflies and other small creatures on film. I live in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, from where I made forays into the rainforests, until I came down with an auto-immune condition known as dermatomyositis in July 2000. I am now on long-term medication, and the doctor treating me has advised me against going out into the sun. So, until I recover from that condition, I have to put my camera equipment aside. I certainly hope that my butterfly-chasing days are not over yet. Meantime, being mostly confined indoors, I have turned my attention again to web-authoring. I have now given this site its first "major" make-over after it came online in April 1998. Prior to this, I have also made some changes to my first website, Chin's Nature Corner, set up in December 1997. I built another site, UP CLOSE and PERSONAL, in December 1999 to commemorate my conversion to Christianity*. I have also built two other nature sites, and updating all these sites is keeping me busy. You are certainly welcome to take a look at my other websites.

Introduction

Greetings! My name is Chin Fah Shin. Thank you for visiting my website. I have been taking pictures of butterflies as a hobby since 1982. I consider myself fortunate to be living in a tropical country, Malaysia, that (among many other factors) has more than 1,000 recorded species of butterflies (1,181 species to be exact). I hope my fellow butterfly enthusiasts from the other parts of the world, and nature lovers in general, will enjoy looking at the photos in this website.
It is my aim, through this website, firstly, to promote the love of nature. Secondly, I hope to show that observing and photographing butterflies in nature can be an absorbing and enjoyable pastime. It is certainly a better alternative to catching and needlessly killing them. I hope the pictures and articles here will convince you of this, i.e. butterfly watching is better and kinder than butterfly collecting.
This site is perpetually under construction. I will be adding more pictures in stages whenever I have time to scan them. Please leave a message in the guestbook or send me an email if you have any comment regarding this website. Please drop by again.

Acknowledgements
Graphics courtesy of Butterfliew Are Free I would like to acknowledge with thanks the assistance rendered to me in various ways by Dr Laurence G. Kirton. I would also like to thank Simon Chan Kee Mun who has helped me with identification and also contributed writings and photos to this website. Simon wrote the first article, From the Diary of a Heartbroken Surrogate Father, for the Butterfly Tales section. He has followed this up with a story on the Rajah Brooke's Birdwing (Troides brookiana) and a couple of poems. Many thanks go also to Khew Sin Khoon and Mohd Fairus Jalil for identifying some of the species from my photos, which is always a risky or difficult task. Fairus has recently set up his own website entitled The Butterflies of Borneo. I also wish to record my appreciation of Angelfire.com for free-hosting this website. And thank you for visiting this website.

Reason for revamp

This site has been redesigned. In the previous, frames-based version, advertisement banners had appeared in each of the three frames on a page, and this had created a confusing appearance. So, I have now done away with frames. With this make-over, the pages should look better, I hope, with only one copy of the ad banner appearing on each page.
