The Plain Tiger
(Danaus chrysippus chrysippus)

THE Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus chrysippus) is quite a common butterfly. This species is found in a large part of the world stretching from the Mediterranean region (Greece) to tropical Africa, and through South Asia down to Australia. It is also known as the African Monarch and Golden Danaid (in Australia).
In Malaysia, its food plants are two milkweed species, Asclepias curassavica and Calotropis gigantea. The latter is cultivated by the Indian community as a medicinal herb. Many, many years ago, I collected some D. chrysippus eggs and caterpillars found on Calotropis gigantea and bred them out.
