This caterpillar of the Archduke (Lexias pardalis dirteana) hanging head-down by its
“false leg” conjures up images of an acrobatic showman dressed in a colourful cape.
The “cape” in the caterpillar’s case are the spines radiating from
its body. Another species with spines like these is
the Baron (Euthalia aconthea gurda).
The “false leg” enables the caterpillar to hang on to a firm support as
it gropes about for another foothold when it is moving around.
