The Common Palmfly
(Elymnias hypermnestra)

COMMON Palmfly (Elymnias hypermnestra) caterpillars feed on a wide variety of palms (Palmae), including coconut and oil palm. For many years, I had seen several E. hypermnestra flying in a hibiscus hedge under a coconut tree just across the road from my house. After this coconut tree had been chopped down, I see them less often now. The specimens pictured here were bred out by me some years ago on a potted decorative palm and another type of ornamental palm (from a neighbour's garden) which has long, narrow leaves.
