The Common Mime
(Chilasa clytia clytia)

THE Common Mime (Chilasa clytia clytia) is another “widespread” species that is found from Sri Lanka and India to south China, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, the Philippines and the Lesser Sunda Islands. The Common Mime (family Papilionidae) is a mimic of some danainine species (the “milkweed” butterflies).
Its food plant is the “wild cinnamon” tree (Cinnamomum, a species of Lauraceae) which is sometimes planted as a roadside tree. There is one in my neighbourhood on which I have found the caterpillars on several occasions. So, it wasn't difficult for me to get a steady supply of their food and breed them out. The adult butterfly is also quite often seen flying in this area.
