The Baron
(Euthalia aconthea gurda)

THE Baron (Euthalia aconthea gurda) is quite widely distributed. This species is found in Sri Lanka and India through Sundaland to the Lesser Sunda Islands. It is said to be common in Singapore. The larval food plant is mango (Mangifera indica), and it may be found in some numbers in orchards and gardens where this fruit tree is grown. The caterpillars have also been found feeding on cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale) and on some kinds of mistletoe.
I found caterpillars, on two occasions, on a young mango tree in front of my house in a Kuala Lumpur suburb some years ago. They developed to adulthood on the tree.
