THE BACHELOR VI 11/25/04

Q. You were right! I'm sorry I doubted you, but I honestly thought Tanya had a chance.

A. Byron sincerely liked Tanya, and I believe both could have been good friends, but I never saw any real romance between them. Tanya is a really nice person; I honestly like her.

Q. I know you did not like the fact she confronted Byron.

A. Perhaps I am being too realistic here, but don't these individuals know the premise of the show is to send bachelorettes home every week until there is only two left, and then choose the final one on the last episode? Of course he is going to try to keep the suspense going, it is part of the show and what the producers want. Except for B-1, when the bachelorettes were in the dark as to what would happen, everyone else who applies to be on this show should know and accept that simple fact.

Q. What a romantic proposal! What do you think of the couple?

A. I wish them the best, of course. Now is when the real relationship begins. I personally believe both have a good chance of making it; they are similar enough in the things that count. Moving together, and creating a home environment for each other, is a formidable first step.

Q. You're not getting off that easily! What were the "things" you mentioned last week both had to work out in their relationship?

A. I may be wrong but Byron appears to be a little weak in the personality department. Although, Byron is divorced, he needs to emotionally terminate his relationship with his ex-wife and move on.
On Mary's side, she has a strong personality and can be overwhelming at times. As she now begins to familiarize herself with Byron, Mary needs to identify the fine line between being loving and caring, on one side, and a little too possessive and controlling on the other. Byron may love the first, but he loathes the second, therefore she will have to control her own emotions at times.

Q. So you really think they can make it?

A. It is difficult to say. I was fairly certain Jen and Andrew shared the basic qualities to develop a strong long-term relationship, and they did not end up together.
I believe Mary is wise enough to know how to make Byron happy. Byron, on the other hand, is going to enjoy that passionate love he sees in Mary, and the adoration and pampering her family is going to give him. I believe he needs to be pampered, and he found the right person in Mary.
Both share a love of adventure and romance, compatibility of characters, and the special gift of being able to sit down for hours, with your loved one, and hold an intelligent conversation without becoming bored or running out of topics. That, in itself, is a sign of true compatibility. The answer is time will tell, but they share a good foundation in which to build a lasting relationship. Both will constantly need to work at it, though.

Q. I want to get to Jen in a minute, but first clarify a little about your last comment, it sounds interesting!

A. I remember a long time ago, someone asked me for one powerful example of what would constitute a good sign a couple was really compatible. The answer to this apparent simple question is actually long and complicated. I simplified it by saying I strongly believed if two people spend a weekend by themselves, with no friends, movies, TV, or outside interference, and still enjoyed each other's company to the point of wishing it would continue past Monday, then it would indicate both had found someone special. I personally know of a large number of relationships where the main thing holding them together is their group of friends or the entertainment marathon they need to experience in order to keep away the boredom. Both would be climbing the walls if left by themselves for a week.

Q. Alright, lets get to Jen! What did you think about the promo they showed of the Bachelorette?

A. I want to try watching the premier with an open mind, and not become too involved in guessing her reasons for accepting the role.
I do believe the show is going to hurt the feelings of many, Andrew included, even if he is going to portray himself supportive of her decision.
Privately, his family is probably appalled and wondering where is the Jen they met at the televised home visit, the same Jen who afterwards preferred to stay behind when Andrew had to do his nationwide promotional appearances. I applaud when people learn from past mistakes and move on with their lives, but this series is not going to pass peacefully without us seeing strong emotions from both sides. I can predict that much already.

A.T., Wendy, and the rest of our "gang" wish everyone enjoys a Happy Thanksgiving!
