August 14, 2014: To Appomattox expanding to 12 hours, preproduction planned for autumn, production planned to begin in early spring 2015
Okay, so there's been a slight delay in the tentative plan to begin production on To Appomattox. This miniseries project is absolutely happening, but preproduction is planned to kick off this autumn, with filming to start in early spring, according to an announcement today from writer/producer Michael Frost Beckner. He also announced this awesome news: To Appomattox is being expanded to 12 hours! (Previously, the plan was for 10 hours and, at one point, that had been whittled down to eight.) Now, here's hoping that Damian and Helen will be able to keep their busy schedules open enough to portray the roles of William "Tecumseh" Sherman and Julia Grant. (Are you listening, Broadway? Can you please plan Night Of The Iguana so that Damian can do both projects?) Fingers crossed!

July 31, 2014: To Appomattox forges ahead, expect production to begin this autumn
Chances are, at least some of you had given up hope that the miniseries To Appomattox would ever be made -- especially when the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in May didn't reach its goal. But get ready for an about face. Although the Kickstarter didn't reach its financial goal, it did manage to generate attention. And to make a long story short, writer/producer Michael Frost Beckner shared some excellent news today: The production has attained agreements regarding equity funding for the project, foreign pre-sale/distribution and a "heavy-hitter" production company/partner. In some cases, they've achieved multiple agreements, so there are backups -- which is even better. As a result, the project will be moving into preproduction shortly, with production almost certainly to begin this autumn! At this point, primary filming locations are expected to be Virginia and New Mexico, but locations won't be confirmed until the preproduction stage. Now, let's all just hope that Damian and Helen will be able to keep their busy schedules open enough to portray the roles of William "Tecumseh" Sherman and Julia Grant. So far, nothing has been announced that would get in the way of that for either of them.

May 13, 2014: New To Appomattox goal: No money, just people -- show your support TODAY
You may have noticed that the Kickstarter campaign for To Appomattox ends in just a few days, and it's nowhere near the dollar goal. For those of you who have hesitated to contribute (and maybe for some of you who have), this actually might be GOOD news. There is virtually NO CHANCE that the $2.5 million will be raised by the campaign deadline of 11 am (ET) on Friday, May 16. But what that means is this: NO MATTER WHAT YOU PLEDGE, YOU WILL NOT PAY ANYTHING. More importantly, IT IS STILL EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SUPPORT THIS CAMPAIGN, EVEN IF YOU JUST PLEDGE $2. REMEMBER, YOU WON'T PAY THAT $2. Confused? This statement today from To Appomattox writer/producer Michael Frost Beckner, should clear it up: "We need the number of backers up, up, up. When I retool and go back to networks this summer (after they all return from New York where schedules are now being set), I will still be up against the "there is no audience for a Civil War drama" mantra and they will now have the numbers from the Kickstarter to back their words up. At this point, pledges cost zero. All we're doing now is taking roll so stand up and be counted! MFB" So basically, supporting this project will cost you ZERO. This campaign just needs people to show their support -- to stand up and be counted, like a vote. Yes, you need to pledge to do that, but you WILL NOT BE ASKED TO PAY WHATEVER YOU PLEDGE. Also, anyone from ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD may pledge support for this project. So please, if you haven't already, please pledge, and ask your friends and family to do the same. LET'S GET THE PEOPLE COUNT UP! We need as many people as possible to show interest, so that the studios and networks will realize there IS an audience for this. Then they'll back it with their money -- not ours -- it'll get made, and we can watch this extraordinary series with 10 hours of Damian and Helen in what is sure to be among the best roles and performances and projects of their careers.Yes, it's THAT good! (I've read a version of the entire script, and it is AT LEAST as good as Band Of Brothers!) Damian wants to do this. Helen wants to do this. They've both been attached to it for years, pushing other (more lucrative) projects to the side for the opportunity to play these roles (for virtually nothing) -- that's HOW MUCH they and the other cast members want to do it! We can STILL make this happen -- for them, and for us, the audience! So PLEASE make what is now going to be a symbolic, no-cost pledge before the deadline, which is 11 am (ET) on Friday, May 16. Pledge here. THANK YOU!

If you think it's worth $2 for Damian to be able to work with Helen as well as with his Band Of Brothers buddies Richard Speight, Jr., Neal McDonough and Jason O'Mara again, and to portray the famous Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman -- the role he's been wanting most to play ever since he attached his name to this project FIVE YEARS AGO -- and for us to get to see him portay this awesome role with this wonderful cast in this amazing miniseries, then go to the To Appomattox Kickstarter page and make a pledge. You won't be charged ANYTHING until the pledge period ends next month (and even then, you'll only be charged if the campaign's goal is reached). Please don't wait. Please support this project.

March 31, 2014: Wolf Hall begins production next week, Damian to portray Henry VIII
About two months ago (see news item dated January 31, 2014), it was announced that Damian was "in talks" to portray Henry VIII in the six-part drama Wolf Hall. The PBS/BBC miniseries begins filming next Monday, April 7, 2014, in Wiltshire and, according to the Wiltshire Times, Damian (who is currently filming Our Kind Of Traitor), will join the on-location filming later next month in the role of Henry VIII. Originally, production was to begin on this project in June 2014 (according to the reports from January). With it starting so much earlier, the production on Wolf Hall thanfully will not interfere with Damian's availabiilty to portray General William Tecumseh Sherman in To Appomattox -- which goes into production in July 2014. Incidentally, more news coming on To Appomattox very soon, since the Kickstarter campaign launches on April 9, 2014.

March 19, 2014: It's official! Damian to portray Sherman To Appomattox
Finally it can be officially announced that Damian has been cast as General William Tecumseh Sherman in To Appomattox! The possibility was hinted at last week (see news item dated March 13, 2014) when IMDB mysteriously had replaced his previously attached role of James B. McPherson with that of Sherman. I can finally share what the miniseries' writer and producer Michael Frost Beckner had confidentially shared with me on that same day: "I can't announce yet, but Damian is back in the original role he came on board for which he had to move off of for Homeland." Hopefully, now that we know that leaving Homeland has allowed Damian to take on the role he most wanted, and has for a few years now, will help ease the pain of losing Brody. And congratulations to Damian! Now we all just need to do our part when the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign launches -- 3 weeks from today on April 9, 2014. Check back here for details as they are announced. In the meantime, this site now has a To Appomattox Kickstarter Campaign information page.

In May 2013, BBC Radio 4 premiered the one-hour radio drama The Prince featuring Damian and Helen. The programme will be rebroadcast next weekend, on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at 3 pm (UK time). Anyone worldwide may listen live at the time of broadcast here. (If you are in the US, note that the UK has not yet switched to "summer" time, so the time difference is one hour less than usual. The live broadcast will be at 11 am ET/8 am PT.) The programme also will be available for online listening for 7 days following the broadcast here.

March 14, 2014: Another new film role for Damian
According to the Daily Mail, Damian is cast as British intelligence officer Hector in the spy thriller Our Kind Of Traitor, set to begin filming later this month in London, Paris and other locations. (Cheers to Chantal: A couple of weeks ago, she found some rather nebulous (at the time) "evidence" online that linked Damian to this project. Due to the suspect nature of what she had found, and the complete lack of anything else online to corroborate it, she and I had both agreed that it was probably not the real deal. But, now we know, it was the real deal. So hats off to Chantal for the super-sleuth find!)

March 13, 2014: Kickstarter campaign for To Appomattox launching on April 9, 2014
The date is finally and firmly set: The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help fund the production of To Appomattox is launching on Wednesday, April 9, 2014. This is our opportunity to help make this project happen, and to receive some fantastic rewards in return. Details on the rewards and everything else are still to come, but a few rewards that may interest some of you have been announced early: One (already mentioned on this site a few weeks ago) is a frock coat that will have been worn by Damian as part of his costume during filming. Another reward -- just announced today -- is a speaking role opposite Damian in the miniseries. For more about the project, visit the To Appomattox performance details page here at the site. The page for the Kickstarter campaign for this project won't go live until launch time in April. But if you would like general information about Kickstarter visit the Kickstarter main site. P.S.: If the Kickstarter campaign is a success, production on To Appomattox will begin in July 2014.

March 13, 2014: Possible role change for Damian in To Appomattox
Earlier this week, Michael Frost Beckner, one of the creators/producers behind To Appomattox, made the following statement while communicating about the Kickstarter campaign and other steps being taken to perpare for the upcoming production, including getting firm deals with cast members, as the start date approaches (the all-caps are his): "I can't tell you about the MAJOR cast changes we're SO EXCITED ABOUT right now but they will be posted on Imdb.com fairly soon as actor reps make the adjustments." Well, today there was a very interesting change: IMDB no longer lists Damian for the role of James B. McPherson, but now he is listed for the role of William T. Sherman. For the moment, so is William Petersen, who was listed for that role long before today. So it seems perhaps this is one of the cast changes in the works -- but it's not confirmed. Keep checking here for updates as they surface.

February 13, 2014: To Appomattox Kickstarter campaign to start soon, and here's at least one contribution incentive you'll like
Within the next few weeks the Kickstarter campaign for To Appomattox will be launched. Here's something that will get you and the other visitors of this site very excited: According to the miniseries' producer Michael Frost Beckner, one of the contribution incentives will be a frock coat that Damian will wear in the miniseries! There has been no word yet on the contribution amount needed to be eligible for this reward. Those and other details are yet to come. But in addition to the announcement of this very special incentive item, this also helps solidify the prospect that Damian indeed will be portraying James B. McPherson in the miniseries as planned all along. Most likely, the same holds true for Helen: that she will portray Julia Grant. (No announcement as of yet for rewards linked to Helen or her character, but only a couple of rewards were mentioned in passing. When the Kickstarter launches, full details will be released.) If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, plans currently are for the miniseries to begin filming in late June or July of 2014.
