As a service to the Shire community as a whole, we are proud to present this page, being a (hopefully) weekly highlight of an outstanding example of the Shire horse.
Any registered Shire horse is eligible for consideration on this board, regardless of the registry. ASHA, SHS, CSHA, French, German, any Shire properly registered with ANY registry is eligible.
HOWEVER: only horses that are superior examples of the breed will be featured here. This site is an educational site, and is not intended to be a vanity site--only Shire horses that exemplify the best of the breed will be seen here.
Suggestions for horses to be considered for this page can be sent to Shire Horse of the Week, along with good pictures showing conformation of the horse (both sides at the very least, good front and back shots as well if possible). Please include a brief commentary on the horse, discussing good and bad points, sex, color, sire, dam, dam's sire, owner, any prizes, championships or recognitions, where and when won, and breeding history if any. Height, weight, shoe size, any other information you have or can think of.
SHIRE HORSE OF THE WEEK
EARNSHAW IDEAL (46635)
Black stallion foaled 1993, bred by R. T. Mortimer, England, owned by Black Forest Shires, Black Forest, COI.
By Whittlesey Winston (46172) out of Earnshaw Jewel (142035) by Ladbrook Courage (45986)
"Earnshaw Ideal was imported from England in 1999 by Jeff and Christine Bartko, after a long and exhaustive search for the best black Shire stallion in England.
"This horse had taken the English Shire show world by storm in his short career, starting with 1st prize Colt Foal and Grand Champion Foal at the 1993 Burton show, and
continuing his campaign with multiple 1st prizes and Grand Championships each year he was shown, culminating in 1st prize and Grand Champion Stallion honors at the
English National Shire Show in 1995 and 1997. To put this in perspective, Ideal defeated 19 older stallions in 1997 to win his championship, and 64 stallions
in total.
"Ideal stands an honest 18.1 hh, and is a true black. He has exceptional action, and top conformation. Note his level topline, the smooth blend of neck into shoulder,
and the quality of his pasterns, especially in the action pictures, where the springy support action of the joints is in full evidence.
"Ideal has been awarded Premium Stallion status by the SHS each year since 1996 thru 1998, after which he came to the US. A Premium stallion is one that has not
only been inspected and approved for registry with the SHS as a stallion, but has been found to be of superior quality."
