THE TRUTH ABOUT UHAUL

This page and the pages that it links to, are here to inform and educate. I have used Uhaul and had good experiences, I've also used Uhaul and had such a horrible experience that I will never use their trucks ever again. On the otherhand..I like trailers and will likely rent a 4x8 trailer from them whenever I need to haul something.

THE UHAUL WEBSTITE & "CONFIRMED RESERVATION"
The name Uhaul is sort of like Kleenex or Xerox, although it's a brand many people say it as a generic term. Type Uhaul into a search engine and you'll get a dozen or so responses of sites like this with hate rants and terrible stories. Why would anyone book with Uhaul? Well it's simple: First of all they have a large fleet of trucks and the only fleet of trailers. All of which have deceptive ads plastered all over them.(a 14 foot truck that rents for $29.95 has a HUGE ad on the side that says "NOW only $19.95", but that is referring to a 10 foot truck not pictured) Second their website, will take all the reservations it receives. Budget and Penske will tell you if they have the equipment available or if it's not available, Uhaul on the other hand will take a reservation when the equipment will not be available.
OUR STORY-5 days of waiting, for a truck we never got
Friend's Story-stuck in the rain

HOW GREED WORKS
So basically the average person gets on the Internet to book a rental. They shop around and look for a good price and find out that the Penske and Budget websites report equipment will not be available for that day. They go to Uhaul and get a "Confirmed Reservation". The day of the move comes and no truck is available. This is the point when the real problems begin, now it's too late to get a truck from another company, so you're STUCK with Uhaul. Uhaul keeps telling you they expect one to come in tomorrow and you keep waiting. Every time they tell you, we'll have one soon. Then nothing. You have to WAIT and WAIT and WAIT for a Uhaul. WE were lucky enough to have the option of waiting. But when You are moving out on the 31st and someone else is moving in on the 1st, you don't' have that option. If you have hired movers and they are coming to load your truck, and coming to unload your truck, you don't have that option. If you are in the Military and have orders to at a certain place at a certain time, you don't have that option. If you are a student and classes start on a certain date, you don't have that option. For most people moving is a big ordeal and a time critical one at that. Uhaul seems to think that this is not relevant for their business model.

THE MONOPOLY
The Trailers may be the ONLY good thing about Uhaul UHaul is the only company in the United States that rents trailers one-way without a truck rental. That is essentially a monopoly, so they have no motivation to actually take care of their customers. When I worked as a Delivery Driver for an auto parts store, I often saw a Penske or Budget truck pulling a small Uhaul trailer.

THE OUTCRY!
Be sure to check out DONTuseUHAUL.com and read the Report at the Better Business Buerau and why not type "Uhaul, boycott, and customer service" into any search engine and see what comes up.

GREED VS. SAFETY
Uhaul trucks are SUPPOSED to be inspected every 5,000 miles. I don't believe it's being done properly. The message boards at dontuseuhaul.com are filled with first hand accounts of bad trucks.

A SAFE MOVE
Your only chance for a safe move is to go with another company. Budget is about the same price in-state and Penske can save you around $600.00 if moving out of state!(saving almost enough to buy a HITCH and small TRAILER )
