The Thelma Nolen Cornfeld Memorial Scholarship


The Self Family Newsletter Thelma Nolen Cornfeld Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 to honor the late Thelma Cornfeld, researcher and author of articles relating to Oklahoma and of articles about Self family ties to native Americans. A $250 scholarship will be awarded annually to (1) a student enrolled in a college program, preferably in history or political science OR enrolled in genealogy courses and (2) who has demonstrated an interest in genealogy and (3) who is related to a Self descendent.

AWARD CRITERIA

1. Each applicant must be enrolled in a college or university with an intended major in history or political science OR enrolled in courses in genealogy. Proof of enrollment must be included with the application.

2. Each applicant must complete the application form and must show relationship to a Self/Selph/Selfe researcher.

3. Each applicant must compose an essay of no more than 2 typed, double-spaced 8 ½ by 11 pages. The topic should demonstrate the applicant's philosophy toward history, political science and/or genealogy. A listing of hobbies, interests, and activities related to history, political science, and genealogy will be appropriate.

4. No more than 3 letters of recommendation by SFN members may accompany the application.

5. Each applicant must provide a photograph for publication in the Self Family Newsletter and on the web site.

JUDGING PROCESS

A committee of Self Family Newsletter members selected by the organization's newsletter compiler, or successor as appropriate, will select the recipient who will be announced at the Self Family Newsletter annual gathering. The honoree may be invited to attend.

TIMELINE

1. Applications will be mailed to all SFN researchers, as requested, and information will be made available by announcements in the Self Family Newsletter.

2. All entries must be postmarked no later than March 1 of the year of consideration. The final judging process will occur by e-mail and/or snail mail voting by the selected committee members during the month of March. The final tabulation based upon the committee findings will be made by the SFN compiler, or successor as appropriate.
