So, this is my first entry since 2002. I'm getting ready to go to Australia; I leave this Saturday, four days from now. I've never been out of school and work for this long. I haven't had a damn thing to do since my last final exam on 19 December (my birthday, by the way). I have, though, read some good books. I suggest reading Nick Hornby; I enjoyed the two I read by him. And The Hours by Michael Cunningham was also a really great book, I thought.
Why isn't prostitution legal? I whole-heartedly believe it should be. Here's how it could work: The government could tax it, like it does any other business. And the tax money could go to fund health care programs for prostitutes, and to pay for contraceptives and disease preventatives.
I don't think I will ever be a prostitute, but I want the freedom to choose (or not choose) that profession legally. I certainly don't think prostitution should be a criminal offense. People too often confuse criminality and legality with morality. They are not the same thing. Legislation should serve to protect people from other people. As soon as the notion of "protecting people from themselves" comes into play, that's where issues get confused. The government should not be in the business of protecting people from their poor pitiful selves. The very idea of such a thing impedes freedom.
