Tommy Felts

Tommy Felts is a free-lance writer with columns printed in The Ottawa Herald, Ottawa, Kansas, The Coffeyville Journal, Coffeyville, Kansas, and The Paris News, Paris, Texas.

At The Ottawa Herald, Felts serves as pagination editor. His daily duties include page design, information management and Web site maintenance. He has worked for the publication since August 2005.

He was previously employed by The Paris News, where his responsibilities not only involved column writing, but also included page design, business reporting and feature writing. Felts worked for the publication from September 2004 to July 2005.

In addition, Felts' professional experience includes work at The Montgomery County Chronicle, in Caney, Kansas, a member of the Taylor Newspaper Family. There, he worked as a news, feature and column writer.

Felts graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University-Commerce, in Commerce, Texas, in May 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, minor in Political Science. AT A&M-Commerce, he served on the staff of the The East Texan, the student newspaper of the university, as the Arts & Entertainment Editor and later as the Editor-in-Chief.

During his time at A&M-Commerce, he also served as the Vice President of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, Vice President of Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science honors society, and as an elected student senator in the Student Government Association. In the SGA, he held the position of co-chair on two sub-committees and participated in four others. Felts was also a member of the Pi of Texas Alumni Association of Phi Theta Kappa, the Alpha Chi Honors Society, and the Model Arab League organization at A&M-Commerce.

In 2003, 2004, and 2005, Felts was awarded numerous awards for page design and column writing from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.

While attending Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kansas, (2000-2002) he served as editor of both The Prodigy, the college's honor's program publication, and The Bird's Eye View, a campus-wide student publication.

Before gaining his Associate's degree from CCC, Felts was active in a number of organizations, including the campus Honors Program, Student Government Association, and the Eta Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

In 2001, he was named to the All-Kansas Academic Team.
