Brutus at 4 months of age
Brutus is the coolest puppy in the world. I wanted him for soooo long, and then finally in May of 2000 I found him. I picked him up on June 1, 2000. He was exactly 8 weeks old. He was chubby and HUGE for an 8 wk old puppy. He weighed 17.5 lbs. He was so sweet, and slept all the way home
Unfortunately Brutus had a condition called Colitis when I got him. It caused him to make nasty poop messes all over the place. My mother was less than pleased, as I wasn't moving out of her house for another month. The vet put him on some medication and it cleared up about halfway through the month of June.
In July Brutus and I moved 500 miles away, to New Jersey, to live with my boyfriend Jon . Brutus made a complete mess of the carpet, but most of that was my fault, not his, because he let us know for the most part when he had to go out
Brutus wrecked our couch when he was left alone, and began tearing at the carpet. We still loved him and wanted him though, so we tried to work with him. I found out I was pregnant in September and began getting AWFUL morning sickness(all day sickness, I should say) and wasn't able to pay as much attention to Brutus as he deserved. He seemed to mind, too, as he started acting a little more depressed and lazy. I decided it might be better if we found a better home for him.
The first people we worked with didn't know much about the breed, but thought he was beautiful, and sweet. We tried to explain that he was a lot of work, but they were just awe struck by his appearance, and didn't really hear us. They took him home for one day. They brought him back the next day. I guess he wasn't right for them. I'm glad they brought him back instead of just trying to sell him to someone else
We decided at this point to try a little harder with Brutus. We bought a nice big Great Dane sized crate, so that he couldn't chew up our couch anymore when we left the apartment. We got a prong collar for him, so that I could take him outside without risking him pulling me and me slipping and sliding all over the ice. This seemed to work for awhile.
It started to dawn on me that I would not be able to take care of Brutus, our two kittens and a baby once May rolls around, so I started thinking about placing Brutus again.
We finally found a WONDERFUL new owner for Brutus. Her name is Julie and she has had Great Danes her whole life, and her last Dane had died about 3 weeks before she saw our ad in yahoo classifieds.
We're really greatful to have found someone who knows the breed, and will let us come visit him occasionally. I'm really happy about the new owners. It makes me feel a little better about selling him, knowing that he's in good hands.
