The apartment is located up on a hill in the Balboa area of Panama City, in the former Canal Zone. Balboa is a beautiful area of colonial architecture, mature landscaping, parks, and Panama Canal administration buildings. There are two small parks adjacent to my building, as well as towering trees and a protected forest behind my back yard. | |
| The neighborhood is very quiet, and is close to shopping (5 minutes to Albrook Mall), restaurants (several within 5 minutes), services (you can walk to the bank and post office), and entertainment (walk to the Balboa Theater, movie theaters 5 minutes away). We're also five minutes from the Amador Causeway and the Panama Canal. You can get to almost anywhere in Panama City in 20 minutes or less, depending on the traffic. |

Deer
come down from the forest and graze in my backyard, and the trees
around my building are full of birds. We have toucans, hawks, owls and
over a dozen species of songbirds. The sound of birds singing at sunrise
and sunset, as well as throughout the day, is amazing.
My mango trees also attract the neighborhood iguanas, conejos pintados, ñeques, and other friendly animals. |
|
| There are four 1500
s.f. units in the building. Each unit also has a two-car garage on the
ground floor, as well as an additional parking space outside the building.
We all share the back yard and green areas around the building for picnics
and bar-b-ques. I have good, quiet neighbors, and we've never had problems with robberies or other intrusions. The neighbors look out for each other; it's a pretty harmonious area. I miss living there. |

| The building was designed and built in the early 1920's for American executives of the Panama Canal Company. It is constructed of solid concrete and has a Spanish tile roof. The building was completely remodeled (plumbing, electrical, etc.) in the 1980's. My apartment has hardwood floors, ten-foot ceilings, and large jalousie windows that wrap around the building and take advantage of the prevailing breezes. Located up on the hill, we catch the breeze and rarely turn on the air conditioner. The building's long roof overhangs protect the apartment windows from afternoon rains. I never close the windows. The apartment is full of sound and wind and light. | ||
