NHL Announces 03-04 Schedule & Big Changes
Division rivalries and "Heritage Classic" highlight 2003-04 schedule
July 21, 2003
click here for the Devils 03-04 schedule
The NHL announced the 2003-04 regular season schedule on July 16th and the Devils will open their season in Boston on October 8th. They will raise their 2003 Stanley Cup Championship banner at their home opener on October 16th versus the Toronto Maple Leafs. All 30 NHL teams will follow an 82 game schedule with 41 games at home and 41 games on the road. The Devils will play one game this season at the neutral location of Rochester, NY with the Buffalo Sabres on November 12th. The NHL will also hold the "Heritage Classic", the first game that will ever be played outdoors. The game will be played at an outdoor arena capable of holding 55,000 fans and will be played between Edmonton and Montreal on November 22nd. Another big and noticeable change this season will be that the teams will wear their colored jerseys at home and their white jerseys on the road. 2003-04 will mark the first season since the 1969-70 season in which teams will regularly wear their white jerseys on the road. Each team will play each team in their division six times this season, they will play each team in their conference three times and each team in the opposite conference at least once. This means the Devils will meet with the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers, and Pittsburgh Penguins six times this season including four games with the Islanders in the month of December. Goaltender Dominik Hasek will also be back with the Detroit Red Wings this season after one year of retirement. The Devils will take on the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in Anaheim on November 26th in what will be a rematch of the classic 2003 Stanley Cup Finals. The Devils complete 03-04 schedule can be found by clicking here. On that page the scores of each game this season will be posted and it also includes all the Devils scores from the 2002-03 season.

June 9, 2003
For the third time in nine years and in New Jersey Devils history they are the Stanley Cup Champions. The Devils defeated the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim Monday night in the deciding Game 7 in New Jersey. Along with the Stanley Cup win, the Devils set a NHL record for most home wins in one playoff year with 12 and goaltender Martin Brodeur recorded his seventh playoff shutout this season, more than any other goalie in a single playoff year. Rookie Mike Rupp scored the Devils Stanley Cup winning goal in just his fifth career playoff game. Former Duck Jeff Friesen scored New Jersey's other two goals as they defeated the Mighty Ducks 3-0. With fresh memories of the 2001 disaster in Colorado, the Devils did not want to have a repeat. After losing Game 6 in Anaheim, the Devils were ready to take on the challenge at the Meadowlands for Game 7 as they outplayed, outshot, and outscored the Ducks. New Jersey is now tied with Detroit for most championships since 1995 with three. Devils coach Pat Burns who also won his first Stanley Cup played veteran Ken Danyeko who has sat out most of the Finals games and has been a Devil since 1983. Brodeur played his best game since Game 2 and led the Devils all the way through the game. The Conn-Smythe Trophy handed out to the MVP of the playoffs was given to Jean-Sebastian Giguere, goaltender of Anaheim and it was just the fifth time in NHL history the trophy was given to a player on the losing team. Martin Brodeur, captain Scott Stevens, Sergei Brylin, Ken Danyeko, and Scott Niedermayer are the five Devils who have played on all three New Jersey Stanley Cup Championship teams. Niedermayer who's brother Rob Niedermayer was playing for Anaheim led the NHL in assists during the playoffs and was the most dangerous player on the ice. The Devils cruised through the first two rounds versus easy opponents like the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning found the playoffs to get harder in the third round when they blew a 3-1 series lead to Ottawa and won a Game 7 in Ottawa in the closing minutes. Then, after winning the first two games versus the Ducks, New Jersey lost their 2-0 series lead but never fell behind. After winning Game 5 but losing Game 6, the Devils played a perfect Game 7 to win the Stanley Cup. MORE COVERAGE AT THE PLAYOFF DATABASE. The complete Devils/Ducks series scores and schedule can be found below. All playoff scores and a Stanley Cup Final preview and game-by-game recaps and summaries can be found at our playoff database.

Since the Devils won the Stanley Cup Championship on June 9th, they have been recognized and quite busy. This past week they have appeared on Letterman, Live with Regis & Kelly, have rung the closing bell and the New York Stock Exchange, have thrown the first pitch at a Yankees game, and their Stanley Cup Championship celebration at the Meadowlands was today. Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur also won his first career Vezina Trophy (awarded to the leagues best goaltender) at the annual NHL awards ceremony in Toronto this week and once again received the Jennings Trophy awarded to the goaltender who allowed the fewest goals during the regular season. At the awards ceremony, John Madden also won his second career Selke Trophy.
