Minutes of the Meeting – 14 January 2009 

Present:

Youth Council – Alistair, Tom, Amelia, Will, Molly, Elliott, Emily, Ash, Natalie, Ella, Jim, James, Eleanor, Ed

  1. The minutes of the meeting on 17 December 2008 were approved.

 

  1. Matters arising. 

·         Video Project.  Photos to e used need to be decided upon.  Clare will bring in CD’sfor members of the Video Group to sort through as soon as possible.

·         Swan Youth Centre Trustee Meetings - Young Persons Rep. Elliott Ben and James have expressed an interest in attending the meetings.  Next one is Monday 2 February at 8pm.  Clare will send a reminder nearer the time.

 

  1. Election of Officers. Amelia reported to the members that she will not be standing again as Chair and will step down from the Youth Council totally due to other commitments.  She said she has really enjoyed her 5 years with BYTC.  She will however attend the next meeting to officially hand over to the new Chair.

 

After speeches from those standing for positions of Officers, voting took place and the results were:-

  1. Treasurers Report.  There is £1524.14 in the bank.  Bag packing at Waitrose raised £138.  Discussions on this took place and it was agreed it would be good to make this a yearly fundraiser but members need to inform members of the public more about why they are packing the bags and what the money will go towards.

 

  1. Gigs. Next gigs:-

·         23 January.

·         6 and 7 February - Benefit gig in aid of Wamba Community Trust, Kenya.

Please can as many members as possible turn up to help and support these events.  Clare explained a bit more about what the money raised will go towards in Wamba village.  It will help fund more Aids Awareness training for the young people and provide more essential educational resources for Golgotim Primary School as well as pay for Samoki to attend Further Education.   Ella said it would be fantastic if a group could go out next year with Clare to visit Wamba and maybe help teach English in the School.  Clare will look into this during her trip out in February.

 

  1. Social with Tring Youth Council.  Wednesday 28 January 2009 5-8pm.  This is being held at Gable Hall and will include icebreakers and team building games followed by pizzas!!  Youth Connexions will fund it in the main and members will make a £2.50 contribution along with a £2.50 per person contribution from BYTC funds.   All members were give a HHCC Consent form that must be signed by a parent and sent off in the envelope provided

 

  1. Police 10 Minute Slot.  Discussions took place including feed back to the members about the success of the Halloween campaign.

 

  1. Any Other Business.
  • Feeling Good Night – Ashlyns School Thursday 5 February. Ella will meet direct with Sandra to discuss publicity.  BYTC will have a stand with a chocolate mountain.  Ella to provide and needs to discuss with Clare what needs to be bought for it? Eleanor, Ed, Emily and Ella said they will help on the night.  Meet at the school at 6.30pm.   Event is 7-9pm.
  • Grass Roots Funding.  Clare reported about this funding of up to £5000 and asked members to discuss ideas that could be applied for.  Initial ideas included a basket/football mini court, fitnss sessions, swimming session, DJ courses, Residential.  Ella will put together a form to take to Feeling Good night to consult with other young people. 
  • Charity Walk in Aid of The Children’s Society.  Ella reported on this event on Sunday 10 May and said it would be great to get a group together to do it. Emily, Ella, Eleanor, James, Will, Tom and Ali expressed an interest.

Minutes of the Meeting – 14 November 2007 

Present:

Youth Council – Alistair, Will, Molly, Ella, Natalie, Amelia, Harriet, Ben, Gemma, Emily, Elliott, Tom, Chris, Jorge as observer

  1. The minutes of the meeting on 10 October 2007 were approved.
     
  1. Matters arising. 

·         Emily said that her name was not on the list of people present at the last meeting.

·         The date of the Christmas gig will not be changed from 14 December.

·         There has still not been any communication from the Czech Republic re an exchange – Will to chase.

·         A second bin has been installed at the skate park.  Clare asked all members to report any faults, damage, graffiti to her so she can pass onto DBC. 

  1. Treasurers Report.  Elliott informed members that he is going to stand down as treasurer due to other commitments.  He was thanked for all his hard work.  Ben expressed an interest in taking over, Harriet nominated him and Elliott seconded him. Clare will arrange a meeting with Ben 
     
  • Total in bank £2108.00
     
  1. Festival of Light. Friday 30 November.  Only 3 members turned up to the sub meeting.  Another is arranged for this Friday to collect donations from local businesses.  Molly, Natalie, Will, Ben and Tom will meet at the Swan after school on Friday.  Can all members bring in unwanted gifts, bottles, tins, toiletries etc from home to go on the stall?  On the day, members can meet at the Swan at 2pm, as Ashlyns in shut that day, to help sort out things and label items. We will set up the stall from 4pm.
     
  1. Dacorum Youth Council Christmas event. Arranged for Thursday 29 November, but Alex informed members that there is not enough money in the budget to go for a meal and Quasar. Members said they would be happy to pay for Quasar.  Alex will sort things and let us know.
     
  1. World Shapers.  Shane from World Shapers explained about a new training course for young leaders and any members interested could take a form to send back to him.
     
  1. Gigs. Ella will be taking over organising the bands for the gigs once the Internet is back on at the Swan.  She reported that the last Dum and Bass night was a great success even though it clashed with the rugby final.  Clare will book another one in the New Year.  Dates for next gigs:-

  1. UKYP – Emily has decided to stand down from the UKYP.
     
  1. Youth Advocates.  Will is attending his first Youth Shadow Board meeting on Monday 19 November.  Clare will also be taking Alistair to the meeting along with Alex and Tad who will all receive their training certificates.  Jonathon Jacks introduced himself as the new Youth Advocates Participation Worker and explained a bit more about the Youth Advocates.  The next training event is on Sunday 2 December and anyone else interested in doing this can give their details to Jonathon.
     
  1. Any other business

·         Teen Clinic.  Clare reported that the Launch Event for the Teen Clinic is on Saturday 24 November from 12-3pm and she will be running a market stall from 8 -12noon to hand out flyers to encourage people to come along.  Can any members come and help for an hour or so?  Please let Clare know.  Amelia will help Clare distribute leaflets at lunchtime at Ashlyns on Friday 23 November.

·         Stanley Sharpe.  Elliott informed members that Stanley has not be at all well recently and has been unable to attend our meetings for some time.  Elliott explained that Stanley, an ex Town Councillor, has supported young people for many years to get their voices heard and was very instrumental in setting up the present Youth Council and is a Trustee of the Swan Youth Centre.  Stanley was at the forefront of making sure the skate park became a reality and his input into our meetings is greatly missed.  All members wish him well and our thoughts are with him and his wife Erica.    

·         Youth Service Awards.   Alex said that a group of young people are being recruited to be on the assessment panel for these awards.  Amelia and Harriett expressed an interest and Alex will forward their names to Helen Matthews who will contact them direct.

·         Youth Opportunity Fund.  Alex said that young people are also being recruited to be a member of the panel of young people who decide who receives the funding.  Clare said that three youth council members have already received the training but decided not to be a member of the panel.  Alex will find out more about the training and commitment required.

·         Midnight Ice-skating at Ally Pally.  Alex asked if anyone is interested in this event and will contact them direct with more info.
