The following details have been extracted from the Minutes of Berkhamsted Youth Council for general information for anyone interested in keeping awareness of what happens on a broader scale.

d.     Procedures. Election week is 11th–15th February. Clarification of voting procedures needed. Who is eligible and how do they know? Details needed from Luvena at next meeting (5th February) please.

PERSON SPECIFICATION AND JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Person Specification

It would be helpful if an MYP had the following attributes:

1.     Be lively and outgoing

2.     Have an interest in current affairs

3.     Be able to listen to and respect the views of his/her peer group

4.     Take their responsibilities seriously

5.     Not be afraid to speak their mind!

 

 

 

Job Description

The UKYP aims to give the young people of the UK, between the ages of 11 and 18 (inclusive) a voice, which will be heard and listened to by local and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views and needs of young people.

 

Anyone who is resident in the UK and is aged between 11 and 18 (inclusive) can stand for election to the UKYP. If elected their role will be:

 

1.     To give the young people in their constituency a representative voice at a local and national level.

2.     To encourage the involvement and discover the issues affecting young people who are socially excluded.

3.     To liase with established groups, such as local youth councils and local branches of national youth organisations.

4.     To be aware of current affairs and be prepared to have a view on topical issues.

5.     To participate in the creation of a Youth Manifesto.

6.     To attend the sitting of the UK Youth Parliament.

7.     To attend any local/regional meetings as organised by UKYP.

8.     To listen to and respect the views of other young people, both elected MYPs and others.

9.     To act responsibly when representing the UKYP at a local and national level and adhere to the UKYP Code of Conduct.

10. Not to be afraid to ask for support, advice and help if required.

11. To have a sense of humour!

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR MYPs

 

1.     The UKYP is an independent national body, which seeks to represent no party political view.

2.     The discussions of the UKYP are to be solely issue based.

3.     The UKYP will ensure that the young people of the UK are given a voice on any issue that affects them and as laid out in Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as long as it does not affect the rights of others.

4.     The UKYP will respect the issues as laid in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, to ensure that every young person who participates in the work of UKYP, had his/her rights respected and protected.

5.     Any young person up to and including the age of 18 has the right to have his/her view heard and listened to by the UKYP.

6.     As an elected MYP your duty is towards:

a.      The young people who voted for you;

b.     The young people who didn’t vote for you;

c.      Every young person in your LEA/Constituency

7.     As an MYP it is important that you take your role and duty seriously when you are representing the UKYP, both in and outside UKYP meetings.

8.     As an elected MYP you have a duty to attend UKYP meetings, arrive on time and make sure that there are transport arrangements to and from your place of meeting.

9.     If you cannot attend a UKYP meeting you should inform your adult support worker.
