BERKHAMSTED (Collegiate) SCHOOL (1) Original photographs by Ramón Rami Porta, digitised by Anne Sherry (no relation to Norman Sherry). Text by Peter Such, webmaster and Old Berkhamstedian.
Old Hall, the original school building and Tudor class room photographed from Castle Street. St Peter's church is to the left of the picture.
Composed from two photographs, Old Hall, taken from the lych gate which leads into Castle Street. The wings at each end of the Tudor hall are nineteenth century additions. The tarmac area is still referred to as the Gravel Quad.
Entrance to the library, situated half-right, outside the scope of the upper picture and to the left of the chapel (picture right). The buildings beyond the Library are on the far side of the Grass Quad and adjoin Deans' Hall (note the plural) at the far end of the cloisters. 'Deans' Hall' is so named in recognition of the founder Dean Incent and Dr Fry, predecessor of Charles Greene, who became Dean of Lincoln.
The left picture is a close up of the inscription above the library door (above left).
The right picture is a close up of the inscription on the chapel stone (above right).

Another composition from two separate photographs, taken with the library behind and to the left of the photographer. The large building split between the two pictures is Deans' Hall. |
