AICAP Snailmail News [Digest]

"Due to the seriousness between available funds and our Alliance to assist Canadians and other foreign nationals who are imprisoned within the American prison system, including Canadians in prisons abroad, can be confusing to some. We want to clearly express our attitude in regards to funds. AICAP, regardless of how noble its goals, must refrain from adding pressure or even in some cases, guilt to the world by hounding you for financial support. You are as precious to us as anyone else.

It is true that we say so very little about money, you may think that we don't need or appreciate your donations or subscriptions. This is extremely untrue on both counts, therefore, here are some facts pertinent to our money situation. First of all, we are a non-profit alliance and we feel you can assist us whether you are a wealthy person or in prison.

We believe in compassionate generosity, because it seems fitting to financially support projects or organizations you believe in, truly as a joy and a privilege, not an obligation. It's not up to us (AICAP) to remind you or to compete with other worthy causes for your support. We believe it's your responsibility to commit your funds wherever you feel they may be put to best use, we will not pester you.

Since January of 1995, AICAP has only had a few donors, we receive no regular grants nor any type of government funding. There are no salaries to be paid, our staff of volunteers including our founder, contributes their time and funds whenever possible from their own pockets. No money is spent on fundraising, what funds we had and do receive is put towards our programs. We spend approximately $30,000 per year which includes such things as office equipment, office supplies, phone, copies, printing, postage, etc. [scroll down]

We truly believe that a dollar offered with compassionate generosity has a great impact, your donation expresses trust in AICAP which encourages and inspires our efforts in AICAP. The one dollar donor and the hundred dollar are equally responsible for whatever AICAP accomplishes in this world of ours.

In the past we have tried to produce and provide free copies of our newsletter to each one of our Canadians in American prisons, including copies to members of the House of Commons in Ottawa. We could no longer provide this free service, it was putting us in debt. We had to resort to a subscription format that was reasonable to our incarcerated Canadians.

You are welcome to be on our snailnews mailing list, and when funds are available we will produce our newsletter and distribute it. For those of you who can afford financial support via donations, we welcome you to our Alliance family, as well as those who subscribe to our cause. Subscription rates are as follows (rates are in U.S. currency): l year $12.50; 2 years $20.00, or equivalent in Canadian currency. Kindly let us know so that we will be able to utilize our resources effectively."
