OUR SHEEHY FAMILY

According to records, John Sheehy was born under this name but had an alias, John Kean(e), on the shipping records for his voyage to Australia where he arrived on the"Brampton" in April, 1823. He was sentenced to 7 years as a convict for a political offence.

In the 1825 Convict Muster ,he was JOHN SHEEHY.

In 1834 he married as JOHN KEANE.

He died in 1877 as JOHN SHEEHY.

John Sheehy was born c. 1800 at Ballylongford, Listowel, Co. Kerry, Ireland. His parents were Patrick Sheehy and Rebecca Cronan.

In 1834, John married Catherine Brown, herself a convict. They settled in the Burragorang area of New South Wales and raised several children. The Death Certificates of both say "4 children deceased. Living -Roger, Sophie, Mary Jane."

In 1845, his brother Roger arrived from Listowel with his wife and 3 children and settled in the Cooma area of N.S.W. where they had 8 more children. Many of these families still live in the Cooma area.

An interesting fact --- In 1828, John Sheehy ( using this name) petitioned for his wife, Honora Carroll, to be allowed to come from Ballylongford, Listowel, to Australia. No record can be found of her arrival.
