Introduction

The Holy Quran is the last and final revelation of God to all mankind through his messenger, Prophet Muhammed (PBUH). The Holy Qur'an was revealed through a period of roughly 23 years. The revelation began in the year 510 AD when Muhammed ( PBUH ) was 40 years of age. At that time Muhammed (PBUH) used to confine himself to a cave in Makkah called cave `Hira' on the `mountain of light'. One day when he was alone in the cave, an angel came to him and commanded him to `Read'. Muhammed (PBUH) was surprised to see this and replied that he cannot read. The angel squeezed him and commanded him again to `Read'. Muhammed (PBUH) replied again that he could not read. The angel squeezed him for the third time and commanded him to-

"Read ! In the name of your lord, who has created man from a clot. Read! And your lord is most generous, who taught by the pen that which he knew not"

The above verses are the first verses that were revealed to Muhammed (PBUH) by angel Gabriel. Muhammed (PBUH) was overwhelmed by these words and ran home to his wife, Khadija ( RA ). He asked her to wrap him. He then told Khadija what had happened. She assured him that he spoke the truth, was charitable to the poor, was good to his fellow men & nothing bad would happen to him.

Thus the revelation to Muhammed began and continued almost till the end of his life. These revelations constitute the Holy Qur'an, which is the foundation of the Muslim beliefs.

The Holy Qur'an is divided into a total of 114 chapters called `Surah's in arabic. Each surah deals with a variety of topics ranging from the Judgement day to day to day conduct.

Allah gave all his Prophets some miracles so that they prove themselves among their people. And these miracles are such that they reflect the specialties of the community that the respective Prophets were sent to. Moses was sent to the Pharaoh at a time when the Egyptians were masters of magic and sorcery. Moses was given the staff which swallowed all the other snakes of the magicians of the Pharaoh. Jesus was sent to the Jews at a time when they were very good at medicine. He was sent with the miraculous ability of being able to heal those who were born blind and the lepers. Likewise, Muhammed was sent at a time when the Arabs were masters in poetry
and literature. He was given the miracle- The `Quran'. And there hasn't been as great a literary work as the Qur'an in the Arabic literature as the Qur'an since then.
