The Road Ahead *
As far beyond as we can look back into history, human procreation has always been achieved by the union of the mutually opposite sexes. In nature we do find examples of asexual procreation in some forms of plants, insects and micro-organisms. In Mythology, we have many a narration of asexual conception of humans too. A myth is but a myth. It is however also true that it will be improper to set aside anything that is beyond our ken as a mere myth.
There is certainly substance in the adage that whatever is imaginable is within the realm of possibility and what is not possible within the limits of perception of a human will also be beyond the capacity of imagination of a human mind. It is quite fascinating to ponder about the elaborate scheme devised by nature for procreation. It instils an emotion that attracts an entity to another of the opposite sex of the same species, and yet another emotion to care for the offspring resulting from the union following this attraction, until such time that the offspring is not able enough to survive independently.
As the object of analysis in this article is a human child, we confine ourselves to its study alone. A human’s world is what the human mind perceives. Every perception gives rise to an emotion that emanates from an individual and spreads around that individual’s perceptive world. The reflections of these emotions from objects in this perceptive world give rise to fresh perceptions and consequent emotions, and the cycle goes on. The three factors that define the concept of a child would then be - the biological process of procreation, the emotional attachment to the offspring and the social acceptance of such an offspring. The factor of social acceptance can be identified with the reflections of the emotions emanating from the individual from the objects in that individual’s perceptive world.
As in the case of marriage (with reference to my article titled ‘On Marriages and Mathematics’), of the three factors that I have considered to be defining the concept of a child, social acceptance seems to be of paramount importance. A person need not be a biological parent and can yet have a child by adoption. There needn’t be any emotional attachment between a biological parent-child combination but as society or law deems them to be so, the link lasts for a lifetime. Thus a biological offspring need not be a child and a perceived child who is also accepted by society as such and with whom the parent has an emotional attachment, need not be a biological offspring.
Therefore speaking astrologically, a child can be provisionally defined as an entity who is linked to an individual either biologically or emotionally and by the acceptance of society, where society is the collective psyche of a group of such individuals grouped geographically, ethnically, etc.
Consider the biological process of procreation in further detail. In the case of a female, things are relatively simpler. Under normal situations, a woman can conceive resulting in the birth of child only about 30 to 40 times during her reproductive cycle. The child so born is ‘her’ child – biologically, emotionally and by social acceptance, the three factors that we have assumed to be defining the concept of a child. Now however we have the concept of surrogate mothers, where a fertilised ovule from another woman is implanted into them. Here, she is perhaps only a semi-biological mother, but not one by social acceptance and perhaps or perhaps not emotionally so. Also a vastly larger number of eggs can be removed from a woman than the number of times she can conceive normally, and be fertilised externally in a laboratory. Theoretically all such fertilised eggs can result in a child. The existence of each of them need or need not be known to the mother. Even if known, the mother need or need not have an emotional attachment to all of them. Even if the two above conditions are satisfied, society need or need not accept all of them to be her children, that is they need not be all her children by law.
Coming to the question of males, the chances of a man being the biological father of many children, greatly outnumber such possibility in the case of a woman. A normal male’s mental make up being what it is (or what it ought to be), the chances of an emotional bond between the biological father and a vast army of children is quite unlikely. Society accepting all of them as his children is also quite remote. With cloning now in the realm of possibility, the number of biological children theoretically possible for a person – whether a man or a woman, is infinite.
Then you have the social practice of adoption. Adoption of a child is done for various reasons. It could be just to satisfy the emotional need for rearing one, for continuation of lineage as mandated by certain societies or for economic reasons. Whatever may be the reason, a child once adopted goes into history as the child of the adopted parent, unless there has been an annulment of adoption by the parent within the lifetime of the child.
With nature having endowed us with the requisite emotions for procreation and there being an abundance of biological possibilities for having one or more children, why is it that we find some having many children, some having a few and some not having any? It cannot be attributed to the ‘will’ of a person - certainly not. There are so many people who yearn for an offspring but remain childless all their lives. It is quite unlikely that persons who have many children plan the number in advance. Today with the small family norm becoming the order of the day – partly due to economic reasons, it could be argued that it is a person’s will which plans the size of his or her family. Yet, one cannot answer the question of why some still do not have any, even if they wish to.
Vedic thought has it that persons to whom we are indebted in this life are born as our children in subsequent lives. This is however hard to verify with the present stage of human understanding and insight. For the same reason, we cannot question its veracity either. When I say the ‘present stage of human understanding’ I do not allude to the idea that human understanding is on the ascendant. It could be declining too. It is quite possible that beings that preceded us in the distant past could have had some means of verification of this idea resulting in its propagation. Subsequent generations may have lost this faculty of fathoming inter-incarnational connections.
What could be attempted within the limitations of our current understanding is an astrological solution to the problem, centred round the idea that it is destiny’s directive that we do or not have children, if we were to then how many and what gender. As all planetary movements are definite functions of time and can be mathematically derived, it should also be possible to mathematically derive the date of birth of a child and its gender, as also the possibility of a person not having any at all.
Further, as all happenings in the process of obtaining a child by whatever means as also the process of having a biological offspring who does not become a child are also the truth, these too should be reflected and be decipherable from the horoscopes of both the ‘parent’ and the ‘offspring’. The job then would be to identify rules that result in each of these possibilities. Then for normal situations, the date of birth of a child as computed from the parent’s horoscope should indicate the actual birth of the child. In the case of an adopted child, the parent’s chart should point to the date of adoption.
Then there is this phenomenon that was reported in a news magazine where it is said that on an average at least 12 children a day are given to the wrong parents in hospitals – worldwide. This would neither be a case of adoption nor biological conception. It is a case where providence places a child on one’s lap, and the concerned individuals and society at large assume that the child and the parents are linked biologically as well. It would be interesting to see what information a chart throws up in the case of such children.
Today, almost all horoscopes that I have with me are those of parent-child combinations as a result of wedlock. Even the few that I have of those outside wedlock have society’s acceptance. To be able to really test this definition and its corollaries I should collect a lot more horoscopes involving all combinations.
The following chapters assume a decent understanding of the complexities of Indian Astrology on the part of the reader.
The Astrological Idiocyncrasies
Indian astrological thought suggests that a horoscope has to be looked at from three reference points – the Ascendant, the Moon and the Sun. The effects according to the three reference points is to be considered collectively to identify a trait or an event attributable to the native represented by the horoscope. In addition to these three reference points, there are additional event-specific reference points. For instance, when considering children and child related matters, Jupiter as the significator of children becomes the additional reference point. When considering longevity and cause of death, Saturn as the significator of death becomes the additional reference point. Thus one works with essentially four horoscopes for a given birth date and time.
And there is yet another. According to the ‘Jaimini’ branch of Indian astrology, every horoscope has a set of ‘temporary’ or ‘changeable’ significators in addition to the standard ones. Planets are listed in the descending order of the distance traversed by them in whichever sign they may be in. The one which has traversed the most degrees in a sign is termed the ‘Atmakaraka’ and is said to dominate the affairs of the native. Coming to children, the sixth in the list above becomes the significator of children.
Going to the divisional charts, the Sapthaamsa – (the seventh part of a sign) chart is to be looked into for children, and events and affairs connected with them.
One indication that I have not come across so far in any of the texts that I have been through, is the method of identifying cusps of houses for the charts other than that with the Ascendant as the reference point. So I have extended the same process of dividing the zodiac as is done for the Ascendant based chart, to the other charts too. If the the second house cusp is - say 28
° 29’ 45" from the ascendant, then in the Sun based chart (as well as in those based on the Moon, the fixed and Temporary Significators), the second house cusp will be the same distance - 28° 29’ 45", from the respective reference points. In my attempt at harmonizing standard equations for deriving the birth of child, I have considered all the six reference points explained above.Planets interact with one another, passing on one’s strength or failing in making or marring an event in question, to another according as -
Planets are seen to follow the mathematical rule of ‘two negatives make a positive’. If a planet sports any two negative features at the same time, it loses its inimical qualities due to each of them and gives a residual positive result. The features considered as negative are –

The phenomenon of retrogression needs no further explanation. It is however possible that a planet in retrogression (or in direct motion) behaves and bequeaths favours differently when it is in acceleration, deceleration or uniform motion. For the purpose of this study, these nuances are not being considered. The deviations due to them can be looked into when the number of case charts is sizeable - in the range of 1000 to 1500.
Yet another category of motion that is not being considered is the condition of apparent motionless of planets.
The concept of the attribute of ‘Fall’ too does not require to be explained except with regard to the signs of debility of the Nodes – Raahu and Ketu. There are differing opinions on this. What I state below is the standard that I have adopted for my work and analysis. Other interpretations and norms adopted are given in brackets. While considering the signs of exaltation and fall of the nodes, it will be in order to mention their lordship and other related attributes as well.
Raahu presides over Virgo and Aquarius, while Ketu does so over Scorpio and Pisces. (Some practitioners do not consider lordships for the nodes at all, some consider Virgo and Pisces respectively to be lorded over by the two nodes, while still others regard Aquarius and Scorpio as their respective signs). Raahu is exalted in Taurus, Ketu in Scorpio. (Here too opinions vary. Some consider the signs of exaltation to be Gemini and Sagittarius, respectively.) Raahu and Ketu exhibit qualities that are a blend of the traits of the sign lord of the sign in which they are posited and their own persona, where Raahu mimics Saturn while Ketu is akin to Mars.
Both Raahu and Ketu have a full aspect of the 7th house and a special aspect on the 5th house – similar to that of Jupiter.
As with other normal planets, these shadowy entities too have their personal preferences on who to be considered friends and who enemies. Raahu has Saturn, Venus and Mercury for friends. Jupiter is a just okay! Ketu takes Mars and the Moon for friends and Jupiter is okay by him too.
c) Shadbala (or six-fold strength)
This representative numerical strength of a planet consists of six parts. They are:
Each of the above components of strength consists of further sub-components. Any good text on Vedic Astrology should give a description of them and the respective procedures for their computation.
Each planet has specific minimum required strength (shadbalam) in order to be effective during its operational period. These threshold values for each planet are as follows:
Sun
6.5 UnitsMoon
6.0 UnitsMars
5.0 UnitsMercury
7.0 UnitsJupiter
6.5 UnitsVenus
5.5 UnitsSaturn
5.0 UnitsNot only is there the above proviso of minimum strength, each of the components too have such a stipulation.
The nodes – Raahu and Ketu have no shadbala. There is some difference of opinion about the magnitude of the minimum required strength for planets. The list above has the figures that I have used in this study.
Mrityu bhaaga – literally translates as Position of Death. Each planet – Sun to Ketu, and the Ascendant have been assigned a particular degree in each sign that is designated as its Mrityu bhaaga. A normal planet without any other blemish when placed in a Mrityu bhaaga, gives results detrimental to the native. These detrimental effects are felt in those aspects of life governed by the signification of the planet, the placement of the planet and its house lordship.
As Vedic astrology considers the sidereal zodiac, naturally these fatal degrees correspond to this zodiac. This point brings into question the computed constant – ayanaamsa, used for reducing the tropical longitudes of planets, ascendant and other sensitive points to their sidereal equivalents. The most widely followed norm for ayanaamsa, is considering the star Chitra (Spica or
αVirginis) at 180° ecliptical longitude as the reference point. The current incremental value of the ecliptical longitude of this star should then give the value of the ayanaamsa, which it does. But there are other schools of astrological thought which take the position of other stars at certain positions as reference giving ayanaamsa values that differ by as much as a degree and a half. Now, the effectiveness of the Mrityu bhaaga ranges from about 15 minutes of arc on either side of the specified degree for the speedier planets to about 10 minutes of arc for the lethargic ones. For the Ascendant and other house cusps, this range is about 30 minutes. As the total range of effectiveness is smaller than the difference in the value of ayanaamsa, computations by one norm can place a planet in the fatal range while by another norm it would be outside this range. The chart below that gives the Mrityu bhaaga for each of the celestials.

23 10 06 05 28 19 15 08 14 10…There is some difference of opinion about the Mrityubhaaga of the Moon. Some texts give a different set of degrees. In a few cases in the charts that I have collected so far, the above Mrityubhaaga for the Moon apparently seem to work better than the other set of values. The effect of Mrityu bhaaga is said to be revealed in its completeness when a planet is on the exact degree.
Lack of directional strength
The Sun and Mars in the north, Venus and Moon in the South, Mercury and Jupiter in the East and Saturn in the West are said to possess full directional strength. Conversely, the planets are devoid of directional strength when posited in a house that diametrically opposite to point where it possesses full directional strength. Thus the Sun and Mars in the 4th house, the Moon and Venus in the 10th house, Mercury and Jupiter in the 7th house and Saturn in the 1st house are without directional strength. The intensity of this blemish does not seem to be as severe as that of the other blemishes.
Planets when placed less than a degree apart are said to be in war with the one having a lesser longitude being the victor. The Sun and the Moon do not come into the purview of this phenomenon. It applies only to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. The vanquished planet – the one with a higher longitude, is said to loose its potential to confer results attributed to it.
Some researchers opine that the loss of potential of a vanquished planet is a function of the latitudes of the two planets as well. For the present study, latitudes are not being considered. When the number of case charts is sizeable in the range of 1000 to 1500, this parameter too could be considered.
A planet when placed close to the Sun is said to be combust. This situation renders the combust planet ineffective. Texts provide specific distances for each planet from the Sun within which it is considered to be combust. I have taken these values to be suggestive and go more by how combust planets seem to actually behave when considering a specific event. The intensity of blemish does not seem to be as severe as that of the other blemishes.
Other planet specific features
Some planets when conjunct or bearing the full aspect of certain other planets, register a fall in their potential to give children. For instance, Jupiter conjunct Mars or the full aspect of Mars on Jupiter can render Jupiter powerless in this respect assuming of course, that neither have any other balancing factor. Similarly Mars and Mercury are mutually debilitating.
The last column of the mrityubhaaga table on page 7 identifies the degree within a sign that is considered as a fatal degree for the ascendant or any other cusp posited there. It has also been mentioned that 5 charts – the one with the Ascendant as the reference and the others respectively with the Sun, the Moon, Jupiter and the temporary significator for progeny as points of reference, are considered for analysis. Each of these charts would have a 5th cusp and a fifth house lord. If any one or more of these 5th house cusps were to be placed in a mrityubhaaga corresponding to the sign in which it is resident, the lord of this sign who dons the role of 5th lord, becomes blemished.
Vedic astrology considers one particular combination of placements of planets with particular reference to the nodes, that goes under the name ‘Kala Sarpa Yoga’, a rough translation of this Sanskrit phrase being ‘Time Dragon effect’. When all planets are placed on one side or the other of the Moon’s nodes, this effect is said to exist (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto not being considered). Not much classical literature is available on this.
Observed general effects of this syndrome are that it seems to bestow benevolence on badly placed planets and a quite opposite consequence on well placed ones. As with any other combination, nothing can be generalised. It cannot be said that persons with this combination in their chart will have any kind of common strain in them. But the nodes, if they bind all planets together on one side do have a definitely discernible common effect on the other planets, which manifests itself depending on the qualities of each planet in the chart. It brings sudden, dramatic and incisive changes in fortunes. It can render other powerful planetary combinations in the chart, defunct.
Strictly going by the definition, even a single planet (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto not considered) outside the Time Dragon bind should render this syndrome ineffective. But investigations point to the strong possibility of its effectiveness even when one planet is placed outside this axis and this single planet outside has an exchange of signs with either node or is within 10
° of the node, giving rise to what could be termed as the extended Kaala Sarpa Yoga. This observation is based on treading uncharted paths. Only further investigations on more such charts can establish its validity.
A planet in a sign with malefic planets in the signs on either side, has its potential depleted while one with benefic planets so placed has its potential increased. The extent of increase or decline in potential depends upon the state of the planet, the sign it is posited in and the respective attributes of the planets that cause this syndrome.
An Outline of the Methodology
The procedure that I have evolved for computing the date of birth of children, their number and gender is based on the idea that every planet assumes a child giving potential depending upon its placement in the natal chart. This potential comes to fruition during the operating period of the planets (according to the vimshottari dasa) during the course of the native’s lifetime. Further, after making the event happen, the planet loses a measure of its potential – this measure too being a function of its placement in the natal chart. If the fall in potential takes the active residual potetial of the planet below its threshold level, it no longer participates in the child giving exercise.
The computation of the planetary potentials involve 3 steps.
In the first step, the interaction of planets based on their natural affinities and repulsions is considered according to the different ways that they influence each other. The categories of planetary interactions being considered has been mentioned in the previous section and is reproduced here for convenience:
In the second step, the interaction of planets due to their functional characteristics – as lord of 5th house cusps, as the Aatma Kaaraka or Putra Kaaraka, is computed keeping in mind their natural (or operating) potentials as computed in the first step.
In the third step, the potentials and other related parameters computed in the first two steps are used to arrive at the possible dates of birth of children and their gender.
The emphasis of the entire exercise is to attempt to say that a native will or will not have children, and if yes, then to compute their number, date(s) of birth and gender.
This approach does not take into account the current transits of planets on the premise that as current positions of planets are derivable from their natal positions as a function of time, the natal positions, when considered in isolation, should completely define all aspects related to an event in life.
Rules for each step.
A number of rules have been defined for each step. They have been classifed into many categories like, those applicable for planets exchanging signs or lunar mansions, for planets subject to the Scissors Syndrome, or Kaala Sarpa Yoga, planets subject to specific placements, conjunctions or aspects, etc. The extent of validity and applicability of these rules are monitored by recording the number of times the rule has been applied while processing the charts considered for this study.
Some of the basic assumptions that govern framing of a rule are :
For every rule framed there are exceptions. The exceptions too reflect the same ideas described in the assumptions above. A word about the evolution of the procedures to the point where they stand now, may be appropriate at this point. The process of evolution is a continuous one and moves from one processing cycle to another. Each cycle has the following steps:
The processesing methodology is diagramatically shown in the following page.
The Methodology
Charts are portrayed in many forms in India. A sample chart in the form that is prevalent in South India is shown below. All example charts for this study would follow this representation. The sample representation here contains all the six charts that will be considered for each case study as detailed under the section ‘The Astrological Idiocyncrasies’, as also all supporting tables.
The
first table gives the longitude of planets (tropical and sidereal), indication about the planets’ placement in a mrityubhaaga in the sign of its residence, their respective constellation lords and relative shadbalam (six-fold strength) and also the magnitude of aspects on a planet from others. This is followed by the sign chart, the navaamsa chart, the bhaava chart and the bhaava lordship chart.Navaamsa is the first of the 20 odd other divisional charts prescribed in texts to assess the strength of the planet with regard to its ability to be favorable or otherwise to the native. Of these charts, the Navaamsa is the most important. For instance a planet posited in the sign of debilitation in the Navaamsa chart makes that planet display qualities of debilitation even when placed well in the main chart. On a 0 to 20 scale, placement in the main chart is given a weightage of 3.5 while its placement in Navaamsa is assigned a weightage of 3.
The navaamsa corresponds to 3
° 20’ of arc in a sign. ( 9 x 3° 20’ = 30° ). For placement of a planet in a navaamsa chart, the following procedure is adopted. For a planet placed in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, counting is done from Aries. For a planet placed in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, counting is done from Cancer. For a planet placed in Libra, Aquarius or Gemini, counting is done from Libra. For a planet placed in Capricorn, Taurus or Virgo, counting is done from Capricorn. The scheme of delineating houses in a chart that is followed by many practitioners of Vedic astrology is the one where the longitudes of the 1st and the 10th are first computed. Those of the 7th and 4th, are arrived at by adding 180
° to the 1st and 10th. The remaining cusps are fixed at equal distances between the four unequal quarters so created. The cusp is taken as the mid-point of the house and the house extends on either side of it, in most cases unequally. This, if I am right, corresponds to the Porphyry System of Western Astrology. A planet placed in a given sign need not be placed in the house whose cusp also falls in that sign. As the limits of the houses do not correspond with the limits of the signs, the Bhaava chart identifies the placement of planets within each house and the residential strength gives a measure of how far it is away from the cusp of the house. The closer it is to the cusp, the higher is the residential strength and greater is the effect of the planet in the affairs of this house. The system of delineation of houses that I have used throws up a peculiarity. It should be so for the other systems too, except for those where a house corresponds to sign or where the angular distance between adjacent cusps is taken to be 30 degrees. For places of birth close to the equator, the incidences where two cusps fall in the same sign are few. But as the latitude of birth increases, such instances are many. As the lord of the sign where the cusp of the house falls, is taken as the lord of the house corresponding to the cusp, the result of such placement of cusps would give a particular planet lordship of more than two houses, while another planet in the chart will remain devoid of lordship. The bhaava lordship chart identifies the longitudes of the cusps and their lordships.
The next chart depicted is the
sapthaama chart. This chart indicates the placement of a planet in a segment that constitutes one seventh part of sign equal to 4° 17’ 8.57" called a Sapthaamsa (Sapta meaning seven and amsa meaning part or segment, 7 x 4° 17’ 8.57" = 30° ). In an odd sign, each segment corresponds to the seven signs starting from the sign under consideration while in an odd sign the correspondence starts in a similar fashion from the seventh sign from that under consideration. The table next to the Sapthaamsa chart lists the
Temporary Significators for the horoscope. The planet that has traversed the longest distance in a sign in the chart (any sign), is called the Aatma Kaaraka. It is said to rule supreme over all other planets in the chart. The dasa period of a well placed Aatma Kaaraka can do very good things for the native. The native’s characteristics are broadly defined by the characteristcs of this planet. The next planet in the list by this scheme is termed the Amaatya karaka. He is the chief executive of the native’s affairs and carries out the policy descisions thought out and defined by the Aatma kaaraka. Similarly other planets in the list are assigned control over specific areas of life. This is followed by 4 planet centred charts – those considering the natal positions of the
Sun, Moon, Jupiter and the temporary progeny significator, as ascendants. As already explained earlier, Vedic astrology recommends the use of what is termed – the Sudarshana system of analysis to make an overall and complete assessment of a chart. The Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon, are considered to represent the body, soul and mind of the native. The other two points of reference are the significators of the sphere or activity of life being considered for analysis. The permanent significator for progeny is Jupiter. The temporary significator or chara kaaraka, is got from the list of Temporary Significators (that follows the 4 planet centred charts). Raahu is the temporary significator for children in this example chart. The next item will be the
vimshottari dasa table that gives the dasa balance of the ruling planet at birth and operating periods of the various combinations.

I subscribe to the view that 1 day of a dasa year corresponds to 1 day of the calendar year, but 1 dasa year does not correspond to a calendar year. A dasa year equals 360 days calendar days. In the expansion of the operating periods above, I have used this surmise – as I do with all charts for my work.
Parameters to compute.
From here on, all mention of planetary behavior in relation to their observed placement and interaction with their celestial brethren, is only an attempt on my part to link events in a native’s life to the planetary configuration within the ambit of the stated astrological edicts in the earlier sections. The explanations do not have any textual sanction and their validity can be established only if they are seen to work over a fairly large number of charts and do so without exception.
Each planet is assigned the following credits commensurate with their positions and interactions in the various charts:
Operating Potential (OP)
This attribute provides an overall qualitative picture of the planet with regard to the chart. A planet can assume a value between 0 and 4 – 0 indicating a worst possible state and 4 the best. Processing of a chart is commenced considering a ‘Home Potential’ that reflects the planet’s basic positional attributes. OP then goes through a series of changes depending on the interaction of the planet with other in the chart and also its functional attributes (like its temporary signification, its lordship of a 5th house, etc.).
Each planet has a
‘Home Potential’ according to the sign/lunar mansion combination that it is posited in. The ‘Home Potential’ assumes that the planet in question, its sign lord and constellation lord are all blemishless and the planet is not conjunct any other nor is there any aspect on it. The actual state of the planet is arrived at considering this home state and the actual attributes of all interacting planets. The process of arriving at the actual
Operating Potential from the Home Potential follow definite rules.A navaamsa in a sign (3
° 20’ of arc) represent a quarter of the segment of the area of influence of a lunar mansion and its lord. A sign accommodates the spheres of influence of three lunar mansions. Thus a planet will have nine ‘Home Potential’ within a sign corresponding to the sphere of influence of the lunar mansion and navaamsa in which it is placed.
The table below gives the Home Potentials of the planet Jupiter for the sign Aries.

Potential Depletion Level (PDL).
This parameter gives expression to the idea that every planet carries a certain potential to bestow progeny based on its position and interactions in the natal chart. The birth of a child is an ‘event’ in astrological terms that is the combined effect of eligible planets, in proportion to their potentials due to their position and attributes, brought to fruition during their period of operation in the sequence determined by their relative potentials.
Upon successfully bestowing a child, every planet that has contributed to the exercise, loses a certain measure of its potential. This measure is expressed in terms of the Potential Depletion Level. It is function of both the planetary attributes and the sequence in which they operate to make an event happen.
Functional Potentials are expressed under two heads –
attribute strength and degree of effectiveness. The degree of effectiveness determines at which level a planet comes into play in the event giving sequence. When two or more planets have the same degree of effectiveness, their attribute strength determines which one of them takes precedence. As the planets bestow children, they undergo depletion of their potentials. When potential values fall below threshold levels, the planet ceases to participate in child bestowal exercise.
Repetitive Culpability Factor (RCF).
Every moment in time in a person’s life is defined by a sequence of planets as determined by their operating periods. The balance of operating period at birth in the example chart on page 17 is given to be that of
Saturn - 7 years, 4 months 19 days. This can be further extended to hours, minutes and seconds too.At the time of birth, it in the Moon’s period with the major period of Saturn that operates, and ceases to do so on 11th December 1950. The normal period of operation of the combination
Saturn/Moon is 570 days. The number of days of this period that the native lives through will be the difference in days between the date of birth (23rd January 1950) and 11th December 1950 that is equal to 322 days. This would mean that the native was born on the 248th day (570 – 322) of his Saturn/Moon period.Within the period
Saturn/Moon, time is further divided among the nine celestial entities in proportion to the ratio of their major operating periods and in the sequence – the Moon, Mars, Raahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus and the Sun. The period Saturn/Moon/Saturn begins on day 242.25 and ends on day 332.5.Within the period
Saturn/Moon/Saturn that operates for 90.25 days (570 x 19 / 120), time is further divided among the nine celestial entities in proportion to the ratio of their major operating periods and in the sequence –Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Raahu, Jupiter. The period Saturn/Moon/Saturn/Saturn begins on day 242.25 and operates for 14.29 days i.e. up to day 256.54.Within the period
Saturn/Moon/Saturn/Saturn that operates for 14.29 days (90.25 x 19 / 120), time is further divided among the nine celestial entities in proportion to the ratio of their major operating periods and once again in the sequence – Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Raahu, Jupiter. Of the 14.29 days, the sum of the periods of Saturn, Mercury and Ketu account for the first 5.12 days. This brings us to day 247.37 of the Saturn/Moon period. The period of Venus within this window of time operates for 2.38 days. Thus day 248 of the Saturn/Moon period corresponds to the combination Saturn/Moon/Saturn/Saturn/Venus.Computing the date of any event follows a similar procedure as the one followed for identifying the combination of planets that correspond to the day of birth – but in the reverse order. The strengths and degrees of effectiveness of planets direct the formation of the event giving combination.
In the example above, it is seen that Saturn makes a repetitive occurrence in the event giving combination. The
repetitive culpability factor marks the ability of the planet to make recurring appearance in an event bestowing planetary sequence.
Basic effectiveness level (BEL)
Even if a planet were to sport a high potential, its positioning in an inimal sign or other such blemish can rob it off its ability to initiate or sustain the child giving process at the upper levels of the planetary combination. Basic Effectiveness level indicates this attribute of the planet.
This parameter identifies the preference of the planet in question to give a male or female child.
Planets are divided into three gender based categories – Male, Female and Neuter. The Sun, Mars and Jupiter belong to the first category, the Moon and Venus to the second while Mercury and Saturn come under the third. The texts do not directly mention the category under which Raahu and Ketu are to be listed. I have assumed Ketu to belong to the first group and Raahu to the last. This assignment has been based on the edict that Raahu mimic Saturn and Ketu behaves like Mars.
This standard categorisation is subject to change depending upon a planet’s positional attributes and its interaction with the other celestial entities. The
Gender Preference factor reflects these positional and interactive changes to the standard gender classification of planets.
Computation of Operating Parameters
CASE CHART
The Primary matrix lists all positional attributes of the planets in the chart under consideration. Each planet is assigned a Home potential corresponding to its position in sign, navaamsa and sapthaamsa.
This is followed by the computation of Operating Potentials of each planet considering the interactions between the planets in the case chart. The transformation of Home Potential to Operating Potential follows definite rules. These rules have been classified under various heads like – Exchange of signs or Lunar Mansions, Status of Sign lord and Lunar Mansion lord, Conjunction, Aspect, Planet being subject to Scissors Syndrome and so on. Each rule provides a measure of Potential, Basic Effectiveness Level (BEL), Potential Depletion level (PDL), Repetitive Culpability Factor (RCF) and Gender Preference (GP) to be increased or decreased for the planetary interaction in question.
The result of this step of processing is the Functional Matrix that becomes the input for the next step.
The Primary Matrix, the Functional Matrix, Transformation lists for each planet and the particulars of the rules applicable for this case are detailed in the following pages.
The Primary Matrix.
The Operating Matrix.
The
Repetitive Culpability Factor (RCF) can take on any one of three values – 0, 1 or 9.A value of
9 indicates that the planet can make but one appearance in the event giving sequence.A value of
1 indicates that the planet can make repeated appearances in the event giving sequence subject to having sufficient potential.A value of
0 indicates that the planet can make only one appearance normally and two – if it happens to be the initiator of the event giving sequence and hence becomes the first planet in the event giving list. The second apperance in this case will be subject to its possessing sufficient measure of potential. There are nine lists in this section – one for each of the nine celestial entities : Sun to Ketu. Each list details the rules that have been applied for arriving at the Actual potential, PDL, BEL and RCF values starting from the base values applicable. Against each rule that has been applied, the number of times that it has been effective on the set of 127 charts that have been taken for this analysis, is also mentioned. This figure gives a measure of comprehensiveness of the rule framed.
As mentioned in the earlier section (page 19), the Home potential is obtained from the Home Potential Tables. All planets start with a base PDL of one unit, base BEL of 0 units and a base RCF value of 0. There are a few exceptions to this rule, one of them being that Mars starts with a base BEL of –1.
The Actual Potential computed in this step forms the basis on which the functional potential due to the interaction of planets, is computed in step-2. PDL values computed here are used directly in step-3 when computing the number of children and their respective birth dates. The Basic Effectiveness Level (BEL) is added to the degree of effectiveness (DoE) computed in step-2. RCF values assigned in this step can undergo changes in step-2 depending upon the functional strength of the planet.
Transformation lists for the
Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Raahu and Ketu are given in that order.

All rules for transformation of base potentials to actual potentials have been framed keeping in mind the observed behaviour of planets by virtue of sporting one or more of the blemishes listed in the earlier sections as well as the natural affinities and repulsions between planets as stated in texts.
Each rule is identified by a 6 character code. The rule description is followed by a list of exceptions – if any to the rule. A number against each exception description indicates the number of times this exception has occurred in the set of 127 charts being considered for this analysis.
The exception list is followed by a list of potential transformations and their quantum, that is to be effected if the rule is applicable.
Finally, the number of times the rule has been applied in the set of charts considered and a break-up of this application among the nine planets is provided.
Functional Parameters to compute.
The Operating Matrix (Page
*) forms the input for this processing step. The operating potential (OP) computed in the Operating Matrix is the basis on which the functional potential (FP) due to the interaction of planets, is computed in step-2. PDL values computed are used directly in step-3 when computing the number of children and their respective birth dates. The Basic Effectiveness Level (BEL) is added to the degree of effectiveness (DoE) computed in step-2. RCF values assigned in the Operating Matrix can undergo changes in step-2 depending upon the functional strength of the planet.
Whereas in the previous step, only the natural affinities and repulsions between planets were considered to arrive at the operating parameters, this step considers their functional properties as well. These functional properties are :
As has mentioned earlier, the 5th house from the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, Jupiter, temporary child significator for the chart and the 5th house in the Sapthaamsa chart are considered. The Primary Matrix lists the number of times a planet assumes the lordship of the 5th house and also identifies those that assume the role of Aatma Kaaraka (Self significator) and Putra Kaaraka (Temporary Child significator). That part of the operating matrix is reproduced below.
The operation potential indicates a state of a planet between (and inclusive of) the two extreme states of Bad and Good. An operating potential of 2, would indicate a neutral potential, 4 and above - Good potential and 0 and below – Bad potential.
By this definition, Venus and Saturn have Good potential in the example chart, Ketu tends towrads Good potential, Mars and Mercury hover around average potential, the Sun and the Moon have potentials near abouts the Bad state, while Jupiter and Raahu are in the Bad state.
Planetary interactions at the functional level too are seen to follow the basic rule of - a badly placed enemy becoming a friend and a badly placed friend becoming an enemy. At the operational level, the Home potential chart determined the base state of a planet. At the functional level, the Operating Potentials in the chart above provide the base state.
The planetary parameters that are computed in this step are :
The functional potential is the measure of a planet’s ability to bestow children in its operating period. It considers the planet’s own position in the natal chart, the effect of other planets on itself taking into account both the natural and functional attributes of itself and those of the interacting planets.
The degree of effectiveness determines at which level a planet comes into play in the event giving sequence. DoE has a threshold level. Planets with a value of DoE that is below this level can neither initiate nor sustain the event of child birth in their main operating period or the first sub-period in the main operating period of another planet. They can participate only at the lower levels of the event giving planetary sequence. Planets with a high value of DoE, can not only initiate the event in their main operating period or first sub-period of another planet’s main operating period, but also sustain the event in their own sub-period (in whichever period that is under consideration).
When two or more planets have the same degree of effectiveness, their attribute strength determines which one of them takes precedence.
Repetitive culpability factor (RCF)
RCF computed at the Operating level, can undergo changes at the Functional level due to the existence of certain exceptional functional combinations. The value of this parameter computed at the Functional level takes precedence over that computed at the Operating level.
The three parameters defined above, together determine the formation of the event giving sequence for the birth of a child.
Step-2
Computation of Functional Parameters
CASE CHART
Planetary interactions at the functional level are categorized under 8 heads as -
R1 - Planet as the 5th lord
R2 - Any 5th lord as sign lord
R3 - Any 5th lord as LM lord
R4 - Hosting any 5th lord in sign
R5 - Hosting any 5th lord in LM
R6 - Residence in any 5th house
R7 - Conjunct any 5th lord
R8 - Aspect of any 5th lord
Under each of these heads, seven types of interactions between planets are measured (six in the case of the first category). These are :
C1 - Base measure of interaction
C2 - Either planet being an Aatma kaaraka or Putra kaaraka
C3 - Planet being exalted or resident in ints own sign
C4 - Planet resident in the house of full directional strength
C5 - Planet being the 5th lord 3 or more times
C6 - Interacting planet being the 5th lord 3 or more times
C7 - Planet resident in its own LM or being vargottama
The summary of the above computations is the functional matrix shown below –

CxF002As in the case of rules at the Operating level, all rules for the computation of Functional Potential (FP), Degree of Effectiveness (DoE) and changes to the Repetitive Culpability Factor (RCF), have been framed keeping in mind the observed behaviour of planets by virtue of sporting one or more of the blemishes listed in the earlier sections as well as the natural and functional affinities and repulsions between planets as stated in texts. Finally, the number of times the rule has been applied in the set of charts is provided.
Planetary attributes required for event derivation and computed at the Operating and Functional levels are rearranged as below for convenience.
The third column marked ‘EF’ merely presents the Degree of Effectiveness (DoE) in a more recognizable form. EF is marked as two characters – the first indicating the ability or the lack of it - of the planet, to be involved in the event giving sequence at the first two levels. The second character marks the ability of the planet to participate in the event giving exercise at the lower levels.
The first character can be one of the following –
% : indicating that the planet can initiate the event in its main period, but cannot support the event in the main operating period of another planet (at position two). The DoE value for this code will be 0. The second character in the case will invariably be X.
* : indicating the ability of the planet to initiate as well as support the event at the first two levels. The DoE value for this code will be 1 and above. The second character in the case can be X or -; ‘X’ when Doe <=3 and ‘-’ when DoE is >3.
- : indicating the inability of the planet to either initiate or support the event. Such planets can participate in the event giving exercise only at lower levels. The DoE value for this code will be <0. The second character in this case can be X, Y or Z.
The second character can be one of the following –
X : indicating that the planet can participate at any level beyond the second depending upon its functional strength.
Y : indicating that the planet can participate at any level beyond the third depending upon its functional strength.
Z : indicating that the planet can participate at any level beyond the fourth depending upon its functional strength.
The combination *- will indicate that the planet can not only initiate the event but support the event in its own sub-period (which is the first sub-period in the main operating period of the planet) as well – if it has the greatest Functional Potential of all or under certain other exceptional conditions.
From the Event derivation matrix above, it can be seen that only 3 planets namely – Jupiter, Saturn and Ketu are eligible to participate in the child giving exercise. Of these only Saturn is in a position to sustain the initiative at the second level.
Considering the planetary operating periods on page
*, the period of Saturn operates until May 5, 1957, at which time the native would be only 7 years and a few months old. Moreover, even if Saturn were to initiate the the process, there is no planet with a DoE value >0 to sustain the initiative at the second level of the event giving sequence. The operating period of Mercury follows that of Saturn. The Event Derivation Matrix however, shows Mercury’s inability to take the initiative with regard to giving a child to the native.
The operating period of Ketu follows that of Mercury. Ketu, with a DoE of 0, can initiate the event. In the operating period of Ketu, Saturn is the only planet that can sustain Ketu’s initiative. Thus, the period Ketu/Saturn corresponding to the period December 5, 1978 to January 8, 1980, will give rise to the event.
Though Saturn possesses a DoE value >3, it will not be in a position to maintain its event-making momentum in its own sub-period.
Among the planets that sport the tag ‘X’ as the second character of their EF flag, Ketu has the highest FP value. But Ketu also sports an RCF tag of 9 which eliminates the possibility of it recurring in the event giving sequence.
The next planet in the order of FP value and tag X, is Raahu. The event giving sequence then becomes Ketu/Saturn/Raahu. The beginning of this period corresponds to the date September 17, 1979.
For the next slot in the event giving sequence, planet pool expands to include those with a tag ‘Y’ in their EF flag as well. The pool will now comprise of the Sun (0.00), Mars (0.07), Mercury (1.46), Jupiter (2.52) and Venus (3.00) – FP value given within brackets. Saturn does not find a place in this pool because it has occurred once in the sequence and sporting an RCF value 9, is barred from recurrence.
Venus being the strongest of the lot, it appropriates the next slot in the event giving sequence. The combination Ketu/Saturn/Raahu/Venus corresponds to the date October 10, 1979.
For the next level, the planet prospect pool will see the exit of Venus who has 9 as its RCF value and the entry of the Moon with a ‘Z’ tag. It will also see the reentry of Raahu who has an RCF value of 1 that makes it eligible to take part again in the event giving exercise.
The pool will now comprise of the Sun (0.00), the Moon (2.21), Mars (0.07), Mercury (1.46), Jupiter (2.52) and Raahu (3.26).
Raahu being the strongest by functional potential, it takes the fifth slot too, in addition to the third. The sequence now becomes Ketu/Saturn/Raahu/Venus/Raahu and corresponds to the date October 29, 1979.
The sub-period duration at this point becomes less than a day. Further extension of the planetary sequence will point to the time of realization of the event within this day. For the purpose of this study, I have not considered computing divisions of time less than a day.
The Event Table for the first child of the native whose chart is being considered, is given below.
As explained earlier, one of the basic assumptions of this study is that a planet loses a certain measure of its child giving potential after it participates in a child giving exercise and that PDL is the measure that determines how much potential is lost by each planet.
The columns marked FP/r and DoE/r, indicate the reduction in Functional Potential and Degree of effectiveness for each of the planet that have participated in the event giving exercise.
Planets that participate at the first two levels of the sequence, lose a full measure of FP and DoE. Thus Ketu and Saturn that sport a PDL value of 3, lose 3 units each of FP and DoE.
A planet that participates at the third level loses a half of its PDL measure. At the fourth level the loss is a quarter PDL measure and at the fifth, it is an eighth.
Raahu, by virtue of participating in the third and the fifth levels, loses 0.5+0.125 plus an additional measure that is equal to the reduction measure for its last participation level. The total reduction for Raahu is 0.75 of its PDL. PDL being 4, its FP and DoE are reduced by three unit.
Finally Venus has its FP and DoE reduced by a quarter measure that is equal to half a unit, its PDL being 2.
Reduction of FP and DoE for the planets participating is the first event giving exercise, brings into being the second level Event Derivation Chart that has the planets with their residual potentials.
From the table above we find that even though, there are two planets – Saturn and Jupiter, with a potential to initiate the event in question, there is none to sustain it at the second level of the planetary combination, that is - there is no planet with a DoE value of 1 or more. Thus, the native will have no more children.
The table above marks the Gender Preference (GP) values of planets. Computation of GP values are on similar lines of compuation of OP, FP, PDL, DoE and RCF. These procedures and rules have not been included in this report for the sake of brevity.
As with potential reduction, GP values too apply in proportion to the level at which a planet participates in the child giving sequence. Levels one and two, attract GP in full measure, level 3 in half, level 4 in quarter and level 5 in an eighth.
The total Male preference is overwhelmingly greater than the Female preference, and hence the child given by this planetary combination is a male.

The number of charts processed by the procedure discussed in this report stands at 127, on the day of completion of this report. The rules defined so far, are far from what they finally ought to be – if at all there can be any finality about them! But they would certainly be more comprehensive once the tally of charts reaches the figure of 1000.
Today I accept a computed date to be fairly accurate if the difference between the computed and actual dates is less than or equal to 30 days. This difference can be due to many factors – inaccuracy of the rules that I have framed, inaccuracy of birth time, inaccuracy of terrestrial co-ordinates of place of birth that are remote villages and not marked on any map, non-consideration of topocentric logitudes of planets. Accuracy could perhaps be increased by the consideration of the Shashtiaamsa divisional chart also – as the position of a planet in this chart is given almost as much importance as its position in the navaamsa chart and it is mentioned in the texts that this divisional chart applies generally to all aspects of life and the consideration of other sensitive points in the chart like the Upagrahas and Kaalavelas, etc. Then there is the question of how, where and whether the three outer planets – Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, would figure in this scheme.
Most importantly, these procedures, once they attain a semblance of accuracy, should point towards possible child births in the future from any given chart. In the section ‘An outline of the Methodology’ the evolution of the procedures to the point where they stand now, has been described. The last three years have seen many such cycles being gone through. Looking ahead, I see the need for quite a few more cycles.
What I offer in this paper is certainly not a solution. It is only an approach that – to me, looks promising and worth pursuing with more vigour. I may have made mistakes in my assumptions and many astrological facts may be beyond my ken. It is only when others scrutinise the paper, that these anomalies and inconsistencies would be brought to the fore. I welcome comments and suggestions from all interested students of astrology on the ideas expressed in this paper.
Evolving procedures for other events in life, like birth and demise of parents and siblings and one’s lifespan are in progress and have attained different levels of evolution. The aim is to have a set of procedures using which it may be possible to draw up a familiy tree – upwards, downwards and laterally, from a given chart. Perhaps, only time will witness and judge the success or failure of this effort.
