I began my training in Complementary Health in 1995 with Counselling. This was a difficult time in my life when I was going through a divorce and needed time and support to deal with personal issues that surrounded me. During this process I began to explore many areas of Complementary Health. I found regular Aromatherapy treatments gave me the strength, to take responsibility for myself and so I began my personal voyage of discovery into the wonderful, healing abilities of essential oils. My next stage was to take this a step further to learn and study Aromatherapy. After qualifying as an Aromatherapist I began to put my qualification and life experiences into practice. Raising a family, and bringing up teenage children up as a single parent made me more intuitive and sensitive to peoples needs during these exhausting, lonely and painful times. On looking back, I feel thankful as if my past had been different, I would not be working as a therapist: helping, supporting and encouraging others to gain confidence and hope for their futures. Life can be exciting and rewarding if you let it.
I began my Reiki training in 2000. I now incorporate Reiki within my treatment. My clients have encouraged me to continue my training as they feel they have gained more out of my treatments. In the past a few of my clients had been unable to relax fully after an aromatherapy treatment but since I started giving Reiki there has been dramatic improvements. The body is totally relaxed and balanced. I practice holistic Aromatherapy /Reiki /StressManagement sessions by appointment from my home. The first session is the longest and lasts for around two hours. This involves a thorough discussion about themselves, lifestyle, diet and medical history. This is followed by an Aromatherapy treatment using selected oils appropriate for the individuals needs. After treatment a cup of herbal tea is offered giving space for a relaxing wind down for the client. Oils used in the treatment are given to the client to take home and use accordingly. I offer an after-care service offering support for those who may be more vulnerable or needy at that time.
Working holistically I spend extra time with clients in order for them to go away feeling relaxed, balanced and ready to face the world. I make a few home visits to clients who are unable to travel to my home. I use Fragrant Earth essential oils that are mostly organic. I like to feel I offer my clients a warm, calming environment to relax and let go. Tea lights are lit and gentle-relaxing music is played during the treatment, but this is not compulsory.
My work involved offering Aromatherapy sessions on a donation basis one morning per week. It gave people the opportunity to experience the benefits of Aromatherapy either for students or an introduction to the therapy or for those who faced financial difficulties. I found this to be very rewarding work.
The Langdon Hospital, Dawlish 1997 - present day. My work involves session of half and hour offering Aromatherapy massage to adults with profound learning difficulties. Once again the oils are individually selected for clients’ needs.
Wonford Hospice. Exeter October 2002
Recently my work has led me towards this area. I work from a day care clinic situation offering Aromatherapy treatments to patients. It gives patients an opportunity to share their thoughts, relax and come to terms with their illness. I also offer treatments to carers or partners at the clinic from time to time. I work from Exeter, one morning per week. Since working at the hospice, it has given me the experience and confidence that I feel I lacked previously. I hope to continue attending courses, workshops to extend my knowledge as changes are being made constantly.
The mind, which before massage is in a perturbed, restless, vacillating and even despondent state, because after massage, calm, quiet, peaceful and subdued: in fact the wearied and worried mind has been converted into a mind, restful, placid and refreshed.
