Unnecessary Worries

"You know that tomorrow is Valentine's Day, you did remember that right?"

"I know that, Josh," Lance responded pacing around the living room. "I have to go. Meredith has some things that need looked after and tomorrow is the only day we have completely free from the studio. I can't think of another time that we'll have free that I can go and take care of things."

"This is supposed to be us time. Just you and me. The guys arranged with Johnny for us to have tomorrow off and now you're just going to leave." JC was reaching the point of near hysteria. They had meant it to be a surprise for Lance and JC, some how Lance had found out about it almost a month ago and had made plans to visit with Meredith and take care of some Free Lance business. Any other day and JC could have taken it, but it wasn't going to be just any other day; it was going to be Valentine's Day. It was supposed to be their day and Lance was going to go and ruin it.

"Josh you know that I want to spend it with you, this has to be done. Remember when we said Nsync first?" He watched JC nod. "Well if I take time off at the studio then it's putting my side project first, therefor this is the best time to go and take care of business."

JC could understand. The problem lay in the fact that he really didn't want to let Lance go. He didn't want to argue about it either. His excuses of how it was a romantic holiday and that they were in love and should spend it together wouldn't stand up to his practical boyfriend's thinking; at least not where Free Lance was concerned. He turned away from Lance to look out the window to the pool in the backyard. "I guess if that's what you want to do, then do it."

"It's not that I want to do it," Lance reached for JC. "It's just that it needs to be done and this is the best time to do it." He frowned when JC pulled away from his arms and headed for the back porch.

"You're flight leaves in three hours right?"

"Yeah."

"I guess I'll see you when you get back." With that said JC walked away from Lance and out the door.

JC's slim body cut through the water slowly as he floated around the pool looking at the stars. Sometimes he had to wonder if Lance loved him as much as he loved Lance. It wasn't like he had asked for the world earlier today, just to spend a romantic day with his lover. For all his questioning he was so sure that Lance did love him, but the boy had issues with the proper time and manner for expressing those feelings. This had to be one of the first times that JC had needed Lance when Lance had walked away. JC didn't think they had to worry, it didn't mean the end of their relationship was coming, did it?

It was all too much. JC pulled himself out of the cool water and headed into their house, dripping everywhere as he went. He was letting his doubt get to him. JC had heard Justin tell Lance that JC was tired. The more he thought about it the more that it seemed true. There were a lot of things he was tired of. Nsync was a train moving at such a high rate of speed that he was afraid of where they would end up and all he wanted was off; at least for a few days. This was supposed to their time off, but all they did were guest appearances and studio work. There was no such thing as personal time off it seemed, just time off tour.

Now it looked, to his over active imagination, that he and Lance might be developing problems. It was too much to think about, so he just stopped. Instead he looked at the moon high and bright in the sky. He walked backwards until he hit the nearest wall and slid down until he was sitting back against it on the floor. Water collected in puddle on the hardwood floors as he tried to clear his mind. He needed Lance. Lance was the key to keeping the worries that constantly plagued him at bay.

Lance slid his key into the lock to the house that he and JC shared, turning the knob as silently as possible. He had thought long and hard while waiting with Wes for his flight. In the end nothing that Free Lance offered him was worth the pain he knew that he had left JC in. He had planned on returning to the house right away, but his phone calls to cancel the meetings he had planned took longer than he thought on his cell phone from the airport. At that point he knew that he had to do something special to make it up to JC, so he had pulled some strings and planned a day that JC wouldn't soon forget; he hoped. All that had remained was the hard part; going home and apologizing to JC.

All the lights were off in the house, so he assumed that JC had headed to bed. Slipping off his shoes in the hallway he walked towards the living room and the stairs that lead to their bedroom. Just before he reached the turn in the hallway he stepped in large puddle of water. Looking around the corner he saw JC sitting on the floor looking out the window into the backyard. Lance slid down the wall just around the corner, sitting in the spread puddle.

"You came back…" JC's voice was quiet from around the corner.

"I had so much to do, but all I could think of was you when I was at the airport. Josh, I didn't mean what I said."

"I know. I'm glad you're here. I hate it when all I can hear is myself think. Sometimes it's all too loud." JC reached his hand around the corner.

"Happy Valentine's Day baby." Lance took JC's hand into his own.

"Happy Valentine's Day."
