Lance and JC spent the rest of their vacation in a tense friendship. On the last afternoon they sat on the beach, their feet buried in the earth.

“Do you think that things are ever going to be the same?” Green eyes met blue.

“We can only hope they will be, eventually.”

------

It took all of two minutes for the other members of Nsync to realize things hadn’t worked out between JC and Lance. It took two days for them to reach the conclusion that Lance had reached several days earlier: things wouldn’t be the same without some major intervention. There were no little touches or late night conversations. They spoke in short and halting sentences and didn’t want to participate in group hugs and bonding. What the others did see however, were the little looks they give when the other wasn’t looking, looks of longing and sadness.

Justin had noticed there was something between JC and Lance long before Joey and JC had told him. He had hoped that things would work out between his two friends, but now he could see it all crumbling down around them. He tried getting them to talk but they didn’t cooperate. Justin found himself filling in the silent and awkward moments with bad jokes and silly pranks to break the tension in the group. It wasn’t until Bobbie rejoined the tour caravan that things began to change.

Bobbie and JC had hit it off from the start. They had dated but nothing much had come of it, they were better off as friends. What JC couldn’t share with Lance or Justin he was able to talk to her about. They shared a hotel room because their ‘relationship’ was a convince to JC’s reputation and the PR people’s sanity; but they hadn’t shared a bet in long time.

JC had told her about his feelings for the young bass singer the second that they had started to change. She was livid when she learned that he had turned down the opportunity to be with him. “You mean to tell me that you two were alone, at the beach, and you didn’t even make a move! I don’t think that would have upset the others to the point that they reached. Do me a favor and tell me exactly what happened.”

A small voice reached her ears from under the pillow were JC had hid his head. “He told me that he thought he loved me and I said we couldn’t be together.”

“What were you thinking Joshua, you may have just lost him.”

“I was,” he said pulling the pillow off his head and standing up to look at Bobbie, “thinking that I would save us the problems that would arise if we didn’t work out.”

“So you just accelerated the problem. I thought you told me once that you planned to put a relationship before your career, it looks like you failed in those plans.”

“I was thinking for the group…” JC was cut off by a stinging slap across his face.

“Joshua Scott Chasez, you are being selfish. You are scared of love and are making excuses. I’ve seen you do this before and I am tired of it. I am going to see the rest of the gang. When you have yourself under control again,” Bobbie was fuming as she stomped out of the room. JC sat in stunned silence. She knew exactly what he was avoiding, a commitment.

-----

In the two weeks after Bobbie left the tour things had become even more strained amongst the group. Lance had secluded himself within his hotel rooms and worked at all hours on Free Lance. JC did much the same, the only sounds he was alive came from his keyboard. The other three members of the band found it hard to have fun the way things now stood. Finally Joey decided that something had to be done about the situation. He started with Lance.

The young blond was working away on his laptop when Joey came in. He looked up once before going back to work. Joey sat on Lance’s bed and waited. After ten minutes Lance spoke up. “I tried Joey,” he rubbed his hand across his eyes. “I know this is why you wanted to come for the weekend and now I wish that I had let Chris let you!” There were tears standing in his eyes.

“Just tell me something. Is what you think you have love or is this just a passing fancy?”

“I love him.” That was all that Joey was looking to hear from Lance. JC was his next target. He knew that the direct confrontation would get him the straightest answers out of JC rather than the passive aggressive style he used on Lance.

He slammed the door closed behind him as he entered JC’s hotel room. He stalked up the bed to stand over JC who was sitting on his bed. “Do you love him?”

“Wha…”

“It’s a question Jace. Do you love him?”

“Yeah, but…”

“There aren’t any buts here. We are all tired of you slapping the hands that are reached out to you. If you can’t tell him that you love him as much as he loves you then you should still have the courtesy to be his friend. Don’t make us make you deal with this, do it of your own free will.” With that said Joey walked out of the room. The look on JC’s face when he confirmed that Lance did indeed love him was priceless. One would think that the two had had plenty of time to figure it all out. He hadn’t thought JC was still clueless. He joined Justin and Chris on the sofa in the main room of the band’s suite. “Five, four, three, two…” On the count of one JC can out of his room like a whirlwind and disappeared into Lance’s room. The others looked at Joey, “Hey when you’ve figured it out, you’ve figured it out.”

"But you were the one worried about what would happen if they did hook up," Chris said.

"That was before I knew it wasn't going to just be a hookup. There really is love there. They just need to figure that one out."

“I didn’t know. I mean I knew, but I didn’t understand.” JC started the second that he closed the door behind him. He turned to see a stunned Lance starring at him with red rimmed eyes. “I mean I really love you.”

“You said that the band came first.”

“I didn’t mean it that way. I meant that I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“I was afraid that you wouldn’t love me back the same way that I have loved you. I was afraid that it wouldn’t be forever and I don’t want anything if it’s not forever. Not for the band either, but for you and me.” JC slowed down to breath, sitting next to Lance on the bed.

“Why didn’t you say something before?”

“I didn’t know until Bobbie slapped some sense into me.” Green eyes widened at that statement. “She left because I wasn’t dealing, I was taking out all my misunderstandings on everyone else.”

“What does this mean?”

“It means that I love you and I want to try us, if its not too late.”

The lights and colors around Lance seemed brighter than they were before and the earth that had stopped spinning suddenly lurched back into motion. He reached out to grasp JC’s hand in his own. “Its not too late Josh.”
